Will it even run if you put a vortex on and the ecu is bad?

Wht not go with a vortex or get

Why would i ever put a vortex on a 18 yz?
Since the vortex is available and able to be programmed further than the stock ecu.

Hi, i had the same problem with my yz450f a week ago and really dissapointed with Yamaha

they should have add a fuse or some sort protection for the ECU

After new ECU all is good? and which dealer did you buy the ECU, can you please send me the name i need to order as well , currently out of stock all in USA (Yamaha Wisconsin warehouse also)

thank!

It’s not Yamahas fault you tried to start your bike the wrong way. So why are you disappointed? I’m pretty sure there is no jump start procedure in the manual. Either buy a $30 battery tender or be prepared to buy new batteries once a year. My 2018 still on its first battery 80 hours later. I will probably buy a firepower battery to save a few pounds soon though.

It is Yamaha`s fault becaue they dont produce high quality bikes as before ...

You know why the battery gone bad? Because the oil seal of the starter was faulty , oil leaked into the starter engine and drawing all the amps from my battery and can barely crank! 14 hours - 2 months old brand new bike

Bought a shorai LFX 240CCA battery already powerful and light , you can try

I’d like to see pics of this oil seal failure in the starter.. either way you aren’t supposed to jump start the bike.. it’s a lithium battery. Also if you even try and get the poles reversed, that’s on you.

Also Yamaha doesn’t produce the starter motors.. they are produced by an outside manufacturer most likely denso or toyo or the like. So it’s their quality control that was lacking in your case.. gonna get a few failures over 10,000+ starter motors produced because I guarantee to they run this motor in multiple bikes across multiple motorcycle manufacturers..

I know several people with zero issues with 60–70-80+ hours on their 18-19 yz450s with no issues. Mine included, on my second top end... Yamaha is not producing a lower quality machine than before.

let me correct then according what you say , Yamaha produce awesome bikes but can not choose the right partners, suppliers for their electronics and electricals...

Business does not run this way ,it is their responsibilty to choose the best suppliers and test properly ..

Lacking quality control cost me almost 600 usd + unpleasent time.. Luckily i do not have any financial difficulties and a back up bike so i can sort the problem.

Please dont forget that there are many riders with limited budget , they will not be as positive as you are and say 'this is not Yamaha`s fault should be denso or Toyo' when they fried the ECU because of a faulty starter..

I would strongly suggest you to google a bit and you will see how many YZ(18-19) owners are having electrical and electronics problems , (as you know YZ got electric starter , wifi unit just a year ago)

Another point even you get the poles reversed it is not very likely to burn the ECU because there is 15A fuse on the selonid ,most likely will blow the fuse or battery

By the way i didnt jump start the bike , starter cranked slower and slower on a track day and at some point fried the ECU and the battery

attached a picture for you and glad to hear that you do not have any problems!

I bought the ECU from my local dealer here in central florida, If you want to get in contact with them then i can PM you their info. Took 6 days for me to get mine. Now that i replaced the ECU and the wires running from ECU to main relay I have had 0 issues. I have no complaints with yamaha(besides the fact they didnt warranty my starter clutch when it failed under 30 hours). Bike out-performs any other bike i have owned. The issues i have had with the bike are all either general maint or wrong doing on my part. Rebuilt tranny and top end at 40 hours ( slipping 2nd gear, all track hours, kind of expected) The battery and ECU failure were completely my fault. Li-ion shouldnt be left sitting for 2 weeks (duh) and you shouldnt put a car battery charger on a li-ion battery especially if you have the ground wire and starter motor power wire reversed. The end result is a fried ECU LOL.

What makes you think that your ECU and battery are fried?

As for you getting oil into your starter motor i have never seen or heard of that.

Starter clutch failure is an another common problem for 18-19 YZ , my friend had the same problem and the bike was
around 43 hours

Actually it was not all your fault, maybe there was parasitic draw or most likely it was the low quality OEM lithium battery..(most common problem for the new YZ)

Lithium battery has the lowest self discharge rate (less then 1% -per month) among all other battery types , especially if you compare with lead acid batteries . ( around 10% per month depending on the temperature)

I have 2 Shorai batteries on my quad and crf , cranking powerfully without any issues even after 7 months no ride or charging.

For my business perspective it is disappointing and not quite logical ;

`You are selling a bike for almost 10.000 USD , proudly marketing the ` new electric starter system` , removing the kickstarter for less friction - weight reduction and using a super low quality OEM lithium battery

After that marketing `Antigravity battery` on the GYTR website for YZ as an accessory

I own a maserati quattroporte and couldn't find a battery upgrade on the Maserati accessories list because battery is not an accessory , you must use the best and powerful battery it is an essential part especially on 450 bike without an kickstarter .. Why I am mentioning Maserati because I consider Yamaha as the top of the line

Why you don't use Antigravity battery or equivalent as a factory standard?

Yamaha is a giant company , how much will it cost to them and what price difference will it make overall ? If you consider Yamaha purchasing volume i am pretty sure not more then 20$..

You could have spend that time (you spent quite a lot time and effort to figure out the problem) and 500$ to buy a top quality boots , FMF titanium pipe or megabomb headpipe Smile rather then fixing a brand new bike …

We are not a mechanic, you just want your brand new bike to start whenever you push that button ! And somehow your battery drained.

If you didn't put any electrical accessories or touched the electrical system and if it is new bike it means this not your fault.
Whatever happened after that ( put a car battery charger or whatever ) you did because your bike was not starting as promised...

In my case it was the starter with full of engine oil inside caused a resistance , drained all the amps from the battery ,overheat the ecu and fried both ecu and battery . It was a pretty cool day and I just wanted to ride ,persistently pressed the start button. It happened pretty quickly

That will be great if you can pm the dealer info as the 18-19 YZ ECU is out of stock due to high demand !

Yamaha warehouse online stock system showing ECU will be available by the end of April , your dealer might have an extra..

If possible can you confirm 3 digit code on your broken ecu and new one , mine is BR91 (attached a picture)

Thanks!

I have seen the starter clutch issues and followed them closely., so far mine is good. Maybe I got a late 18 which had an upgraded unit already.. and my battery is well over a year old and works perfect.. but I do ride every weekend.. I’m
Also just trying to comprehend how the bike could push oil back through a seal and into the starter. Strange issue.. sorry to be crass in the first post but it’s just a extenuating circumstance and not a typical issue.. and I’ve never heard of this happening on any other bike.. and I follow that shit closely. I’ll check my own to see if there is any thing strange in the starter just for my own satisfaction.

We can not discount to fact that these things are ridden in dirt/sand and particles can get into places we can’t see causing issues. It sucks you had to replace the ECU already. But if it wasn’t starting and turning slow it may have been a good idea to let it be for the day and check it all out. Might have saved yourself $600 being a little more patient.

I know post old, but just wanted to thank you for posting wiring diagram/ parts. I had a loose brown and black wire- followed your diagram and solved my puzzle of the missing condenser. I guess others have lost this part as well- after finding out what the 2 wires went to I googled the problem, caused my bike to blow a fuse after they touched the pipe.
