I know there are some of you on this board that have a martial arts background/experience, and so I'm hoping to pick your brain a little bit.

I've been interested in a class (classes actually, once a week at least) in some type of martial arts training...but there are so many different kinds of martial arts, that I"m not sure what would be the best for me?

I do have a wrestling background (jr. high, high school wresting).

I'm mostly interested in the "getting in shape" aspect of it, but I'm also interested in the self-defense side as well.

So which style is best for both practical self-defense, and for getting in shape???

Thanks in advance.

This will work better in "self defense" situations.

My kid did Tae Kwon Do for almost 13 years (stopped at 3rd degree) and enjoyed it a lot.

I love the Keltecs.

My son also took Tae Kwon Do and had fun with it. He did it for a couple years...but got burned out. His was 2 days a week...every week with no breaks.

This is what I'm packing.

I have a buddy that did Akido most of his life. Supposedly he's pretty good, but he doesn't talk about it much.

Any you do will be a good workout. I did Shotokan(sp) for a number of years and it was fun. If I was to do one for self defense, I would look at Krav Maga . My boy is doing Muy Tai and training with MMA guys. It is really good for conditioning.

Krav Maga is what i would probably pick too. There's a Krav Maga training center close to here that my kid wants to start next year.

I did TKD for several years. It's fun. Maybe not the best self defense class though. Conditioning? You'll need other sports for real conditioning. Maybe if you went to an MMA class, but, not the traditional TKD or Karate classes.

Don't know what art suits you best. I know that TKD is hard on the joints because they tend to emphasize "snap" in kicks and punches.

Muay Thai or Jujitsu.

The Best schools teach both.

Kick boxing is a hell of a work out. Whatever you do just dont do normal karate. Ive never seen a karate guy win a fight.

I did Krav Maga for a long time before I moved, sinse there is no where to train here I am going to an MMA gym. If you are going to use it as more of a condintioning deal with the benifits of being able to take care of yourself, try Jiu Jitso. It will agree more with your wrestling back ground, and in a few months youll be beating all your wrestling buddys.

Krav Maga training is intense but its fast pace and not good for conditioning, but Jiu Jitso training is alot of ground work, where you can be grappling with someone over and over again.

The MMA class I go to is like most, they will work on their chosen ground work one day a week, box one day a week and condition one day a week. That may be your best bet.

Another thing with Krav Maga, youll have a hard time finding a good teacher if you live in a rural area. Plus its geared more towards killing someone then conditioning.

UFC champ Lyota Machida might not agree with this statement.

I did jujitsu all last winter and it killed my shoulders. Now I'm doing MMA training with a lot of kettle bell and medicine ball work and dropped about 40 pounds. Lots of fun but killer hard.

You run around with a glock on your belt and now you want to take a self defense class?

Are you having problems with a bully?

MMA is great for getting in shape, the training is very all-round. If you only want to get in shape and is not interested in the martial arts, I would recommend cross fit, it is extremely god training and fun! Check it out, cross-fit three times a week will put you in great shape.

Thank for the info, Ya'll!

At this point I"m leaning toward the Krav Maga (since there is a school really close to my house).

Thanks again!

I agree, but am biased since I take 2 classes per week of both. We do 1 hour of MT, followed by an hour of BJJ. Those are the longest and hardest 2 hour blocks of my week by far!
