A good physical exam goes a long way in diagnosis of shoulder problems.

Cherie made a good guess, based on what you said. I suggest a sports oriented FP, ortho or upper extremity ortho subspecialist.

It is amazing how much longer it takes to heal a minor injury as you get beyond 40 y/o though.....spoken from the experience of this 51 y/o.

Know my rotator cuff gets periodic pain episodes. Kinda sounded like that since the symptoms he mentioned are very similar to mine like range of motion and throwing..

I did a 3rd degree AC seperation in august and it took me about 4 weeks to fully use my arm again. It is still sorta sore to throw a ball too. It does take time to heal, I am 30 and i have had numerous 1st and 2nd degree injuries thru the years but this one is defintly the worst.

I have just had surgery.. been off work for 3 months so far. The injury occured may 08.. so its been hell since.Shoulders suck!!
I had the same symptoms as you on a previous shoulder strain on the opposite shoulder. I found a myotherapist was the best thing for that particular injury i had, it was to do with the bicept tendon, and also a muscle or tendon that attaches to the shoulder blade and runs to the top of shoulder.. Sorry its a bit vague, but thats all i remember from what she was saying. I tried all sorts of treatment, and the myo was the best thing for me.

Whats it mean when you lift your arm up, or get up from a sitting on the floor position, pushing down on your hands, and you hear a slight crunching noise in your shoulder, but it only happens once after using not using it for a few minutes, ie: having your arm in its normal position for a while then lifting it up above your head and hearing it grind, but when you do it over and over the noise disappears?

I gave myself a grade 3 ac seperation in my left shoulder 4 years ago and I still can't do some things without pain and am definetly a little weaker on my left side now. It's all good though my left shoulder now looks like John Dowds and my wife digs it.Woohoo

I hear ya on the strength part. I am almost at 100%. Not really using it for a month or so really makes your muscles go away. I will always have the bump from my c-bone. I ripped all the tendons that hold my c-bone to the shoulder. My ortho said it will be fine and they will all heal to a certain point without surgery. He also mentioned if I was doing a job or what not that had alot of overhead work he said surgery might be neccessary for it.

My ortho told me the only reason to perform the surgery would be to lessen the severity of the bump. He said it would not help it with functionality at all. I do have full range of motion it's just the strength and slight pain if I really work it hard. I still have issues if I am laying on my left side with my arm stretched out over my head too.

and this guy sez he didn't break anything but he also didn't go to the doc, how the fugg does he know if something is broken then?

90% if the time a good ortho can feel if you have an AC problem. Don't delay, they never get better with out either surgery or possibly in your case PT.

I didn't do any PT or surgery on mine. I do alot of physical work, like a firewood side buisness. So far it hasn't bothered any of my functions. At first he thought I may need PT but he told me to keep using it on light duty. I think keeping it moving helped alot. But that is for me.

Been down that road suffered a small Rotator cuff tear behind my right shoulder then bad Tendonitis in the joint I gritted it out with Cortisone shots (that really helped me to get through the pain)rest and a good work out program I was able to avoid going under the knife.

I've had a lot of shoulder injuries. Minor dislocations. In '04 I fell hard. But, I thought it would heal. I wasted 3 months and had several minor sublexations in the process of realizing it wasn't going to get better. I had ligament damage that required surgery to repair.

Moral of the story: if you are jacked up, see a doc and find out if it's serious or not. After 4 weeks, if you don't know it's going to get better, it's time to get it diagnosed.

Sharkey,
same thing happened to me two yrs ago - finally went and got checked 5 months ago and you will have to get an MRI for sure.

My symptoms were lack of range of movement without pain, cant lift weights properly without it hurting and would hit certain spots doing random , normal activities and be painful.

Ended up being tears in the ligaments and tendons that connect your shoulder joint and rotator cuff, etc. Multiple small damages that never heal unless you get them fixed.

If I want to do that, I have to get arthroscopic surgery to get repaired, which I havent done yet.

sounds like the same things going on, get it checked by sports medicine place

Dr. Mark, I had my shoulder pop a few weeks back and I couldn't push down on anything (even shutting a faucet). By the time I got an appointment a few weeks afterwards it was perfectly fine but the doctor did a few things and thought it was my labrum. So I got an MRI about 3 weeks ago and they put some dye in to expand my joint and now my shoulder has been bothering me ever since. I did separate my AC joint about 6 years ago, would this process cause that irritation? I should mention I rode for 5 straight days after the MRI. My labrum is torn as well, but it didn't bother me before the MRI. He said give it a few weeks and if it doesn't get better get surgery.

Sounds like my injury about three years ago. Made my own shoulder pads to wear under the chest protector and they help when I fall on it. All the present chest protectors are junk when it comes to shoulder protection. Back in the day most people wore shoulder pads instead of chest protectors, and very few people had shoulder injuries.
Shoulders take a long time. Mine is gradually getting better but it has been three years.

I have had right shoulder pain for yrs - only bothered me when lifting weights or raising my hand over my head - finally went to the ortho last month. Had an MRI done and it turned out to be a bone spur. My major shoulder muscles are much larger and stronger due to weightlifting. The RX is doing exercises to strenghten the smaller shoulder muscles that don't get enough exercise.

I did 3rd degree AC separation.
Doc just told me to take it easy for 4 weeks, but I had a race the next weekend!
Ice and advil all the way!

Seriously though, swimming was the best workout for getting my strength and range of motion back.

Been through many years of shoulder problems with my son. He ended up having three bankart reconstructions. The last one was impact related at the Minneapolis supercross. The separation was was 3" and the humeral head ended up lodged into the top of his ribcage. I don't think that I am a doctor but I do have some experience when it comes to dealing with shoulder problems.

Are you an ortho?

Possible the dye injection moved things around a little and got it inflamed. I'd give it 6-8 weeks before considering surgery. I like to avoid knives when I can.....and it may calm down with enough time.

If you're over 40, for sure give it more time. Amazing how it takes those minor things to heal as we age.

And I'm betting you nailed it Cherie....

Jim, that comment wasn't aimed at anyone in particular. Just getting a chuckle out of everyone having so damn much experience with shoulder problems. Common in moto, as you (unfortunately) damn well know.

My residency was in Preventive/Sports Medicine. Boards are in Preventive Medicine.

The only advice that I know to be a fact is that if we are talking about a young pro level rider the PT isn't going to work. We wasted over a year dodging the knife and if I had it all to do again I would have had the repair completed after the first dislocation.

For the week end racer or over thirty rider. PT might work out.

thanks for all the advice guys. well when i crashed it took awhile to get off the dirt and i knew i was done for the day. im 40 now but still pretty active riding/ racing etc .i thought this would go away after a few days or a week but it didnt but i also didnt want to go to the doc and seem like being a baby. you know like going in to find out its nothing. it seems if i use it and keep my arm below eye level its not bad but heavy lifting or quick movements you can feel it. when i really noticed something wrong was when i was throwing a ball to my son and it was justa tennis ball that motion hurt alot and i could only throw it about 35-40 feet and not real hard. i can ride and it dont bug me much but as i said if i have to do any throwing like motion with the arm its basically useless or work above my head which for my profession can be alot sometimes. i notice it does seem to have some noise when i rotate it. its been about 2 months now. so do i bother going to a normal doctor or just go to some one who specializes in this stuff

I'll trade ya.

Did this when I turned 40 and I'm on my 4th specialist saying it's fubar! I really miss riding.
