First off, Huck it was good to met you and BS for a few minutes. Let’s get this over with and let the hazing begin. I learned one thing yesterday, you can’t be something your not, and I’m not an off road rider. There is a reason I’m a MX only dude, it’s what I like and enjoy. Two friends I know and I use that term with these two loosely now (both are HS guys) convinced me to do the Fort Smith GP. One of them even took me down to pre-ride the course the weekend before, which was at 7.5 miles. I had a blast and held fast with him on most of the course. Best of all, no single track! Fast forward to the race and the promoter has added 1.5 miles of fresh virgin single track. Not what a KX 450 is made for and the type of riding that I hate the most other then rocks. I intended to sign up for Senior C which is the plus 40 class, but mistakenly signed up for Vet C which was the plus 30 class. So I had to wait in line at sign up a 2nd time to correct that little snafu. Even worse, the sign up ladies said they would ensure I was in the right class, but looking at the results tonight they failed to change classes for me, so I’m shown as a DNS in Vet C and unknown in Senior C. No wonder the scoring booth didn’t show my position when they scanned my number.

At the start, like Huck, my bike took a 2nd kick before I was off. I started to the outside and despite leaving the line almost last, I past about ½ the class in the outside of the first turn. At this point this is where the advantage of the previous weeks pre ride can into effect. I past two more riders on the inside of the 2nd turn, one more over the next little jump, 2 more down the next long straight away and end up behind a slower rider as we went into the bush. Because I took my sweet time to pass this rider the pack of first – fourth were out of sight. I rode hard and after a few minutes came up on the group and made my way past the dude in 4th. We battled back and fourth with me finally taking the advantage. That is until the damn single track showed up. Needless to say it was a good ride up to this point, but I’m no good at single track. After a few mistakes and slow going on my part, plus a little off track exit, a number of riders get by me. After what seemed like 2 hours I’m through the single track and back to the MX track, hit the scoring booth and lap one is done. Despite the single track I’m still in a good frame of mind, riding well and I’m not tired. So I motor on, that is until the single track shows up again. At the entrance to it, there are people watching and I yell “HELL NO, NOT THIS SHIT AGAIN” and get a big laugh from some dude drinking a beer. About ¾ of the way through the single track there is a left hand turn into a big mud bog. I took the wrong line and I’m stuck. This little snafu takes me at least 10 minutes to pull the bike out of the mud. The rut I was stuck in was I’m guessing 15 to 18 inches deep. By the time I’m free from the mud bog. My goggles are wasted, gloves are muddy and I’ve had enough. I ride out the rest of the lap, go through the scoring booth and packed it in for the day to head back to the trailer for a beer. I tried it, had fun on 90% of the course, but don’t care what so ever for the single track. This old motocross is going to stay on the track where I belong. Call me what you want, but I’m a motocross rider, not an off road rider.

One last thing, the dude who took me down to pre ride the course won our class. It’s his first HS class win, so congratulations to my buddy Flip. I also have some pictures I’ll post tomorrow, my friend’s wife took and actually got Huck and Kaw rider in the first turn.

Huck, dude you gotta quit riding in the center of the trail like that, you will take a beating doing that. When I race scrambles Im on the farthest outside edge I can get away with, lookin' for the smoothest line I can get.

Look at that dude on the first vid at 1:30, hes over on the edge haulin' it.
Yeah, that's where that shit hits you in the helmet and your hands. BTW...in the later laps, I did actually move over a little bit.

Pffft, whats a few limb slaps to an offroader? Thats what handguards and helmets are for. You should come thru the check-point with small branches and leaves somewhere on yer bike or you aint tryin'. Dont be a sissy, get over there on the edge and gas it. Wink

hey huck, since your camera didn't have a wiper blade on it, i need you to go back to riverfront this weekend and video the course again. i guess your 'starting in gear' technique didn't work so well. that's me on the kx to your right getting a good jump on you. i heard you yelling as you went by me a couple of turns later. maybe i can get the promoter to leave that tight shit out next year. or maybe we'll just do the team thing. or maybe just be a pit crew. or maybe just party on saturday night. dbm

That race looks like a blast! Not to slam you guys but I thought the single tracks were tighter then that. Either way it looks like a blast, I agree with what alot of guys are saying, once you race one you will more then likely do more. I like doing them more then Mx races any more, not saying I still love throwing down on a mx course though. Good job guys, I would love to hit that race sometime!

My start technique worked about 20 times in a row...until the f-ing start of the race. lol

Yeah, go ahead and meet me there. Whistling

You almost ran me off the track when I passed you. I was yelling, but I didn't know if you heard me. I think I was saying "move over lapper". Tongue

I think next year, I'll party a little less on Saturday night. I'd like to finish in the top 5 next year, about 10 less beers and some bark busters and I think I can be there.

Damn I should have come over for that race. I raced the MX track on the river a couple of years ago and had a blast. Moto and off road is all good and I love to do both. GP's are the shit though..kinda a little of both.

After I stuffed him in the first corner, I didn't see Kaw Rider until about 20 minutes after I crossed the finish line.

I actually was getting a little worried about him, and even asked his brother..."you think we should go look for him?"...

Ummm, no thanks on that stuff. Ive raced scrambles at Zars Ranch in Floresville and there are huge cactus patties and mesquite brush everywhere to get impaled on.

As Huck stated all ready, the entrance to the single track was the last few seconds of the 3rd video. It was wide at that point compared to the rest of it. The woods guys I'm sure loved it. Why I'm not sure, but some guys like big fat blonde's too which I don't understand.

Dang...I wouldn't even know what to do at an off road race when I can actually see (no dust)....

(Not my helmet cam by the way...just found it on youtube)...

Or maybe this...

(I was at this race...I couldn't see a thing for about 5 miles....)

I've been dreaming about an offroad race with a little moisture in the ground to keep the dust away...that might just be heaven!

I did a Hare n hound once... got through the nightmare they call the "bomb" hit a small boulder in the dust, crashed, got hit once, got into the clear, started to have fun, and at the first check they said there was a red flag, so go back and restart.

fuck that....

I did an enduro once, made the mistake of treating it like a MX race. When that race was over I didnt even want to look at a bike for a week. Pure hell.
