Im really interested to see if its progressing the way it should. When Im laying down I have pretty much no pain, I can lift my leg and get maybe 8-10degrees of knee bend till it gets really tight.
The problem is when I stand. Holy shit, the knee starts to throb and gets so hard with pressure from the blood flow that it will barely bend therefore making it really hard to walk.
I cant believe the difference between being vertical and horizontal.
Sound normal or questionable?
Before he started the "scheduled surgery" he had to scope about 40% of my meniscus.
Mine felt like a hot bloody meatball for about 12 weeks.
If he has to drain, hope for a beer color opposed to blood/pink.
People blow this shit off like its nothing but you defiantly just went through a knee reconstruction. Good luck.
Did you ever have any blistering?
I have a little line of blistering along one edge of the sturry strips; I have drained it about 3 times and it is indeed beer colored, thats even how I described it to the on staff doc on the phone the other day
I definitely assumed that since this was an elective surgery that it wouldnt be as serious as it is. Dumb of me.
My problem was a common one.
I'm by no means a doc or med expert but:
Common mistake for mx guy is to come back to early. Generally it takes the graft around 6 months to fully bond bone to bone. Varies for a 16 year old top level athelete vs a vet rider weekend warrior but you get the idea. Problem is, mobility, strength, and confidence starts to come back about 4 months out. I've seen many locals and top level guys come back and do it again because they got a little trigger happy. Preston & Tortelli to name a few.
I had a huge relapse at 3.5 months because I started doing pump track riding on my bmx bike. Started bleeding inside, swelling went nuts and was crazy hot. No beer colored drains, straight menstrual. Let your wounds fully heal. The road bike/ stationary is your #1 homey. Strength/motion/cardio with no impact on the knee.
Hit up racerxvt.com; smart guys in the forum and an article on acl rehab.
Called the doc, they are gonna see me at 3:15 today so hopefully I have some answers/solutions to the standing pain issues soon.
any advice ?!??!
The downside of all the rest was severe edema. The Doc yesterday pressed on the side of my lower outside shin with her finger right by the bruise for about 5 seconds and when she pulled her finger off, her finger indentation remained for a good minute. It was as if she pressed into modeling clay.
So then she continues to deeply massage the bruised edema affected area and hy shit was that intense pain but then she had me turn and let my legs hang off the table and within about a minute my new knee was resting at pretty much the same position as my other knee.
So last night at home I massaged the edema affected area with my legs pointed vertically up the wall on our bed then walked around the house, up and down our stairs and such.
I fell asleep at 9pm, I was BEAT from the first action in 11 days. Sleep was sporadic due to the soreness in my knee area from all the action and massaging. When I woke up this morning almost all of my swelling was gone, it was amazing.
Throughout the day I have been working on range of motion, massaging and walking quite a bit. I am officially ready to start PT, hoping to schedule it for Monday.
Thank you to EVERYONE who offerred insight in this thread; you guys are great!
I don't know about the term edema unless it is like calling a bruise a hemotoma, but swelling like that is normal especially around the incisions. I can leave a finger print around any of my incisions and it will stay a good while.
I am doing pretty good but I still haven't started rubbing down my incisions yet. I will start that probably Monday. I got my stitches out this past Monday but its a little early for me to start rubbing to much. Its not worth it making them bleed or hurt when they don't hurt. Honestly I don't seem to have much scar tissue this time so I'm being real conservative on the rubbing and Patella mobs.
I'm surprised you haven't started Therapy yet. I've already had 4 sessions and I've canceled twice.
My best advice is as it was before. Don't loose that Quad muscle. You get that quad muscle to pop when you flex it and you will be golden. Do your leg raises with your brace on and quad sets. 3 to 5 min at a time, 10 seconds on 10 seconds off. ( You don't need a timer but you get a better workout if you try to stick with the clock especially when you are first starting) Do them over and over until you either get tired or annoyed. I like to find me a spot on the floor in front of the TV and I have a coffee can and a towel. I do my stretches, various leg raises, range of motion for the better part of 2 or 3 hours a day. I don't beat myself to death with it, but just entertain myself with the news or a movie and I've put the work in without even knowing it. I also find that doing situps and tricept presses in between resting keeps my spirits up. The best part is that once you start your exercises, progress is almost noticeable from day to day.
Warm it up, Ice its down, rinse and repeat.
I'm 3 months post - op (left ACL via same knee patella graft) and things are pretty good, managed to maintain good strength in the quads and its saved me big time! Swizcore, in your down time don't forget to 'tense' the quad regularly a couple of sets a day makes a difference
Its getting time to think about knee braces, i've heard alot of good things about the new Donjoy Defiance 3, super slim, lightweight, comfortable, strong with a good strapping setup. What do you guy's think??
Back flat on the floor or bed, knees at a 90.
Push a folded towel up and down the wall with your foot.

I saw my ortho that did my surgery today and the words he used were, "I have never seen this before".
Not very cool.
He was referring to what appears to be severe burns all around my knee. He sent me to get blood work done right away to test for infection and peeled all of the blistered skin off and dressed it as if it were a 3rd degree burn with burn cream, vaseline coated cloth, gauze and a wrap. I am to come see him next week. He gave me his pager # in the event it gets worse before I see him.
I am on Augmentin prescribed by my normal doc as she felt it was infected when I saw her on sunday.
Ortho doc says I can start PT as planned and he was really impressed with my range of motion and how the new ACL is working.
The only apparent problem right now is whatever the hell this skin issue is.
Im wondering if it is infection or possibly an allergic reaction to something...?
I have no surface feeling on the "burn" areas so he's thinking if after time that is still an issue I may need skin grafts.
Lucky me, unique, rare delicate flower has stumped two ortho docs.

Similar bruising for me because I used the hamstring graft. You incision looks tiny.
My surgery turned out to be quite the atypical ordeal.
I ended up with a reaction to the novocaine "cocktail" which ultimately burned my skin tissue around my knee to the point where there is one area which will likely require a skin graft.
This is what my knee looked like a week ago:
I have been on an antibiotic for a little over a week now and we have been treating the skin as a severe burn and over the past 4 days it has really started coming around. Pretty much all the discolored (dying) tissue around the knee is peeling off now with new skin underneath but that black area of necrotic tissue is likely dead and will need to be debreeded and grafted.
I am actually going to get published in a medical publication since they have no record of this reaction by a patient before. Lucky me eh!
There were multiple shortcomings, clerical as well as an error made by the physician assistant at the office I went through which many have told me would be a damn solid court case but I don't know if I want to go that route yet. My actual surgeon didn't do anything wrong, he's been awesome about staying on top of this.
As far as bringing this thread back, keep it up. We got your back man. I for one would like to know how you are doing. Post some updated pics when it starts to heal. I bet there will be huge progress in looks over the next week or two.
No doubt this will limit your recovery theropy and exercises for a bit. Just don't get discouraged with that. It will all come back it just might be a little more slow of a process. Like I said this is my 5th time at this so I'm sure if you have questions myself or someone else on here could surely give you some insight on what is going on with the recovery part if you have questions. Sorry it isn't going as smoothly as hoped.
I am in my 2 week (14 days) and still cant walk. i have a lot of pain and cant get my leg straigth in 180 degrees
I never really had pain from my ACL other than tightness when I first started moving it.
My only pain has been the affected skin tissue.
I actually have GREAT range of motion and start PT tomorrow.
Right now my only pain is my protective wrap moving against the fresh new skin which is very sensitive.
Thanks flickit, it feels good to kind of have this journal of the whole process.
Believe it or not, I walk completely normal with no limp, I dont have strength yet obviously but my ROM is great.
I should add that I do still get pain when standing still from the inflammation but as long as Im walking I dont have that pain. The skin does get a little uncomfortable with the "pull" but its coated in neosporin under the wrap so that helps.
