Not sure how this will look since it’s from my phone and an image saved from my FB post (about 500kb I’m guessing) but I wanted to share something (I can’t seem to share more than one image at a time from my phone) anyway… just a few weeks before Redbud I finally took delivery of my new Z400 2.8 TC lens after a year long wait… I think it was worth it.
this is 560mm 320iso @f5.6 1/3200sec
nice photo!
As a Canon user, I'm very jealous of Nikon's new 400/600 with the flickable TC. I'm hoping Canon makes them eventually, but there's rumor Canon is working on some sort of zooming TC that would do the job. Until then, I'm keeping my fingers crossed for Canon to get their version released.
Got any at f/4?
Needs more strobe

I think its all pretty uniform...where Nikon lacks, Canon excels etc... eventually it will be available unless it doesn't sell or something but I think this 400 is selling well despite the hefty price tag. here's one of Deegan from my computer, ill try to find a 560mm f4.
Who in the fuck could downvote this pic????? What on earth could be wrong with it? It's perfect. Maybe someone who cannot stand a kickstart Suzuki I'm guessing??!!?? Congrats to the camera man, great job!
Tony, Nice composition and background! I assume jpeg? At that price point for the lens, you better be happy! I think it’s a keeper. I just upped for the Canon R3, RF 24-70 2.8L, RF100- 500 4.5 to 7L and still using the EF 70-200 2.8L with adapter. Looking to get back at it!
No strobes necessary... the light was nice and diffused.
ill post a few more in this thread...
Can't please everyone
Thank you for the nice words
You are going to like the R3 for moto. The only thing you will not like is culling through hundreds of perfectly focused images trying to pick your favorites
It's stupid how good these new ML bodies are now.
Yes please, shoot that bitch wide open next race and post some of those. That's what you paid the big money for.
I shoot with an A1, so I know and understand the struggle all too well.
That would be a good thing. It’s been awhile and just getting back up to speed. Thanks.
Yeah, I shot all jpeg to "try" to keep the file sizes down...honestly at 45mp its overkill...considering they were printing 1-2mb 2 pagers without issue back in 2004. I have all new Z lenses now... 14-24mm 2.8 -50mm 1.8 -MC-105 2.8 macro -70-200mm 2.8 and the 400mm ... my kit is still growing though, 2nd Z9 is on the way and looking at a few more lenses... I got a set of Profoto D2 mono lights as well. My goal was to simply enjoy photography again... I'm taking jobs that suit me, that id enjoy... the way I started so many years ago and gonna keep it that way. don't ever wanna lose my passion for it again
Hahahah, another awesome body. Filling up hard drives left and right and trying to figure out how to keep everything backed up in multiple locations.
Nikon is finally catching up with their Z8/Z9, and now I'm envious of some of their glass. But for moto as a Canon user, if one can afford it, the new RF 100-300 f/2.8 would be the ultimate moto lens.
I'm sure Nikon has a cRAW setting like Canon. It's about half the file size and 98% of the IQ of a full RAW file. I shoot cRAW 100% of the time with Canon now.
Pit Row
I’ll have to put that lens on my list for Xmas but don’t think my wife will be inclined…maybe. I purposely looked at the R3 for the reduced MP work flow. Those 45MP are beasts!
I tried to avoid F4 just to keep focus from the tip of the front fender to the goggles but I think during morning practice there were a few times it got pretty dark and couldn't be avoided. the bokeh won't be much different though...its more pronounced when you increase the distance to background and close the distance to subject like this bird image.
I hear you, I'm just a sucker for large apertures and shoot wide open most of the time. I rarely shoot smaller than f/3.2 but I'll occasionally go smaller if I need the DOF for something. As you know at the right distance you can still have the front fender to the goggles appear to be fully in focus at f/2.8-f/4 even though one or the other might be slightly soft.
That’s a nice shot. I like the moss green on the post/bollard and how it blends with the background hues. Catching the beak opened is a bonus.
yeah, its just at 560mm ya tend to run out of room to back up. Redbud is one of the easiest access tracks on the circuit with its wide trackside paths and 560mm was useful but not everywhere.
Thanks...Red winged blackbirds aren't the prettiest birds but it was my first week with this lens and was shooting anything to test it...that was out at the marsh near Lake Erie.
That's the glory of your lens. Flick the switch and you are at 400 without having to remove the TC in the dust bowl. I don't use my 400 often for moto. I usually shoot with the EF 300II on one body and RF 70-200 f/2.8 on the other. If I was still shooting moto often I would be getting the 100-300 to replace the 300II.
it is nice not having to switch on the track... plus the Z9 has the dust door that closes when you turn off the body so lens changes aren't as stressful. big primes have always been my favorite too, the bokeh/compression...the reach. When my 2nd Z9 comes ill dedicate one to the 400 full time and the other will get lens switching duty. What are you using to process images? I bought a maxed out M1 MacBook Pro but it is overkill (right now)... couldn't imagine trying to do these file sizes 15 years ago on what we had...its crazy how far its come.
Have to say though, my old Nikon F5 still stands out in my mind for doing everything perfect...what a great body that was...to have to go to the D2H because the industry stopped doing drum scans killed me...I hated it.
I use M1 MacBooks also but I mostly use a 27" iMac (2020) for the 5k display to edit my keepers. My workflow is to transfer files off the card onto my desktop and use photo mechanic to cull. From there I import my rated keepers into LR classic. I've been on the road shooting for several months straight now so I'm a little behind and I let my current LR catalog get out of control. Whatever you do, don't let your LR catalog get this big as it will make LR run really slow. I need to divide this current catalog into multiple to improve performance in LRc. But the images just keep stacking up. These are mostly all 1DXIII, R5, and R3 RAW files:
