Out of curiosity, whatcha got planned?
Mostly wishing my XR250r had a YZ250 like flywheel. I owned and rode YZ250s off road for a number of years. I decided to sell them to build an XR250r as wanted a reliable in the long term street legal dirt bike with better gas mileage for long range riding and off road touring. So I sold the YZs and built a '96 XR250r. I absolutely love the bike. Its everything I wanted off road. Gas mileage more than doubled, overall maintenance costs have been cut in half and there was no loss in handling on the trail, if anything handling improved as YZs are more of a track design anyway.
Only things I miss from the YZ are the over the top whiskey throttle horsepower and the lighter flywheel that allows faster rpm spool up. The horsepower loss of course is simply how it is. The XR will never make the same horsepower and I wouldn't want it to anyway. I simply have no use for it nor am willing to pay to play with that much HP on this bike anyway. The lightening of the XRs flywheel though I am probably going to have done. I am a long time experienced clutch abuser and miss being able to blip the clutch to allow the motor to suddenly spool up the rpms for various riding techniques. The XR for many design reasons simply doesn’t like suddenly spinning up the rpms. Lightening the flywheel will help this to some extent.
I know the XR flywheel will never be as light as the YZ’s as the XR’s is around 4 pounds stock and there can’t possibly be 3 lbs to spare. I am keeping the lighting system on the bike too so that will limit how much the flywheel can be lightened. I have read that at least 10 oz can be removed from a XR250r flywheel and wondered how that would compare to a YZ250 flywheel is why I was wondering what the weight of the YZ flywheel was. I started the thread as its impossible to search for this information. Whether searching google or forums looking for flywheel weight specs only brings up aftermarket parts information and discussion for adding weight. Its hard as heck to find any specs on how much a stock from the factory flywheel weighs because of this.
