21 husky tc250 refresh

Was planning on one more cold snap here in NC before I did a complete overhaul on my tc. Unfortunately I broke some ribs at a local indoor ax track, so I'll be starting a little early. Here's what we're starting with.

IMG 20230218 120041072.jpg?VersionId=2jDIKQOm

Got it stripped to the frame and cases split.

Not planning on doing anything crazy, as I want to keep it reliable. Currently have a Keihin 38 carb with v force reeds, and a pro circuit 304 muffler.

Ten times better. But I also didn't take the time to do all the mods to the mikuni. I could never get the pilot jet perfect on the original carb.

Got a little more done this weekend. Cleaned the swingarm and replaced all the bearings.

IMG 20230226 150120282

Also got the expansion chamber cleaned up.

Tried almost every mod on the Mikuni and re-jet up and down never get it Right

the old Keihin on my 30 year Old Vintage KTM runs way better than the Mikuni ever did , cant wait to test the PWK on the TC 300

I'll check tomorrow evening and get back to you on it. I got the carb from JD jet so it came with multiple options.

Finished putting the graphics on last night.

Also got the new seat cover on, and received the new quick turn throttle in the mail.

Hopefully the throttle helps me get out of the turns a little quicker. The 450s are eating me up on exits.

I'm running the NECJ at third position, 42 pilot and 175 main. I'm at about five hundred feet.

Started reassembling the bottom end, but still waiting on the case gasket. Should also be picking up the crane this weekend from the powder coater.

How many hours on the crank before rebuild? Was it still in spec, or did you rebuild or replace it? How was the trans gears? Much wear?
I’m considering picking up a 110 hour 21tc250, and wondering how the lower end holds up? Thanks!

The bike had forty hours on it, all stock. Everything was in perfect order and in spec. I rebuilt the crank and inspected all the gears and couldn't find anything worn or damaged. I only rebuilt the crank for preventative reasons.

I think if the guy your getting the bike from is a good smooth rider, and he takes care of his stuff, bike should be good.

If he uses the vented air box cover, I'd pull the air filter and check the boot/carb for dirt and or water. I had to go back to running grease around my air filter. That cover let's allot more shit in than you'd think.

Picked the frame up last night. Looking way better than that navy blue they are using.

Also got the pegs back from Metaltek. The owner is really cool and had fast turn around.

One thing I did have a problem with was the shifting forks. The part number on each fork does not match the number online. Trying to figure out which one went where on the counter shaft was a nightmare. It was hours of trial and error to get it correct.

Also learned the hard way on ultrasonic cleaning a carb. KEEP DIFFERENT METALS OUT OF THE SAME CLEANING BATCH. Ended up tarnishing the carb body, and took twice as long as should've recleaning everything.

What did the metaltek pegs run you?

Seized it going down the first straight away. Bike was warmed up, and seemed to be running good on break in.

Wore the piston on both sides like this towards exhaust. It also wore a little at the ring gap. I'm sure it's something stupid I did, but can't seem to figure it out.

Thanks for that info! Looks like an air leak seize. It's gotta be from one of the seals in the bottom end. Also ring gap could've also been part of it.

No, like a true idiot I got impatient and was trying to get it ready for the weekend. I think the wear at the ring gap was secondary. The damage towards the exhaust port was much more substantial.

3/22/2023 4:45am

What's would you guys do?

Prices are so much higher now to get the cylinder replated, plus all the parts. I can almost save money and get a 300 kit.

Go with the 300cc Kit it’s not that much stronger than the 250 but much easier to ride.

Think it’s about 1000$ for the complete 300 Kit

Did you already found the cause of the Damage?

Have you Check the Piston to Cylinder clearance , think should be almost the same like on the 300 with 0,06mm

I haven't found the definitive answer but I know I missed the o ring that goes between the right side main bearing and the seal. The bike did seem to be smoking more of a lighter color on break in. Which I've recently learned could be blown head gasket or burning transmission oil. The wear marks on the piston make me think the later, as well as the missing o ring.

I checked the distance on initial rebuild. Everything was good there.
