I would think it is a power thing and those people who seek power are more likely to exert that power over others for their own personal appetites. Everyone who runs for office, imo does not need a competency test, they should however be required to take a some form of a lie detector test. The least we can do is try to rule out criminal activity and those who seek power for those purposes.

Politicians are applying for a job, and they should be vetted at least as closely as a guy applying for a grounds-keeper job at a university.
