Hey Greg, you ever hear the story of the WWII guys liberating a city?

They we taught to say, "come out or I will shoot".

Well the sergeant got it wrong and said "Come out or I will shit".

It evidently worked better because the Germans were like WTF?

Scheiße schießen

The second one is shoot.

two years of Spanish and can barely communicate anything beyond Hola and Adios. If you don’t use it, you lose it.

Depends...I go years without speaking any Spanish, but I can still get by with it, as well as reading and writing the language

That's about where I'm at too. I remember a little spanish from some classes in school, but I'd need some serious work on Babbel or something else to make it even remotely workable. Google translate saved my bacon when I visited Mexico last year.

I’m thinking about trying Babbel to improve my Spanish. Go from poquito to conversational. Anybody have any experience with it?

English, Afrikaans (similar to Dutch), Zulu and a bit off German.

I've played with it a little bit (or un pequito) and it's not bad. Definitely worth a try in my opinion. Plus it's free, at least the beginning and first few lessons. One thing that helped me is watching shows like sitcoms that I'm familiar with in Spanish so you get the more conversational side of things and can follow it easier.

Sadly due to the war, my grandparents made my mom stop speaking German.

Clearly they were worried about being attacked by non-Germans even though they had been here for a couple of generations.

The only time I heard German at Grandma's was when I was fucking up, or when Papa fucked up.

Schieze? Simple.

Or, "Schuhe im Haus", or nicht I'm diese haus".

My mom tells a story about her great aunt, who was petrified of the sliding glass doors. For some reason, she thought the children would get hurt if they were playing near one when someone opened it.

I don't know the actual phrase she used, so I'm just going to insert random German words. It must have sounded like, "Gesamtkunstwerk mit dem Vereinigten Staaten und... off comes the finger!!!!
