But I think to make it more positive, some of the most mentally strong guys were definitely RV, RC, Reed, Herlings, Cairoli.. and, Ferrandis. Ferrandis is underrated as he really always believed in himself back in the MXGP days in MX2, he was one of the few that really believed in himself being able to beat Herlings. Even though it didn't happen that often, he never went easy with him.
I love Bradshaw but definitely. First threw away points messing around with Chicken and ultimately launching his joke at him NOT the Paris race but AMA SX. Then going into the last race when points were tight (because of that previous meltdown mentioned) and only needing a 4th or better? Was painful to watch.
A lot of names I have not seen yet but I hate to put Roczen as much as he’s been through, but he’s there.

Roczen & Craig still want to win and their compassion for doing so makes them trainwrecks at times. The other three you mention pissed their pro careers away and I don't feel sorry for them at all. They made their shitty choices in life and it hasn't worked out so great for at least two of them.
Herlings is a great example of mentally strong. It always seems the more pressure he’s under the better he performs.

While not MX/SX, John Kosinski should be the top of any list like this.
A friend of mine in late 2000s introduced me to the team manager with one of the most talented riders never to win a premier class title. I asked if this rider was a head case and the response was "they're all head cases." Didn't strike me as a put down and I took it as a testament to how much the mental aspect makes the difference between the top racers.
Again, not MX/SX but Tyler Durden should be near the top of any list like this.

Marty Tripes comes to mind. Otherworldly talent who often lacked motivation. His weight ballooned up and down during his career and he quit racing and left good teams more than once. He had 14 factory rides counting the teams he rode for twice! But, in his own words (and Bob Hannah's), when he made up his mind to win, he would win. Loved watching him ride.
Windham for the win in this battle.
