I have a 1974 maico 400 it’s been sitting for 15-25 years I tried starting it and I sprayed some starting fluid to see if I could get a pop when I sprayed it in and kicked it it kicked back then I did some research and said it can be caused because timing was too advanced sure enough it was I fixed that and then I took the carb apart to see if there was anything and there was gunk in the carb and I cleaned the whole carb put it back on tried again and it did nothing then I checked the spark the spark was ok so I went to the store found another spark plug go it then it had better spark I put it back in kicked it a little and it popped a couple times like It wanted to run And then after that I kicked it more and nothing happened I sprayed starting fluid in and nothing happened I really need to figure this out thanks and I’ll upload photos of some things I found and I fixed the points I didn’t fix the wire tho cause it seemed to still be intact thanks
I use a multi meter set on continuity to see when the points open or close.

Just got this 1970 250 square barrel delivered this past Friday. Also came with a spare & original 400 motor (rebuilt) for it and extra 1970 frame. It’s currently running point & condenser set up - in very good condition. Maybe one day down the road I’ll upgrade to a HPI or VAPE (formerly MZB dynamo) ignition, but no need to change now.

Are you running a Bing or Mikuni on it? I run Miks on all of my pre-78 Maicos. Easier starting, easier tunning, and way less flooding. I run 36mm on my 360 & 400s and I believe my 250 has a 34mm. Have Bing carbs for all of them, and they’re in decent shape, but the Miks just make them a bit easier to tune & operate.
Because it had ok spark like there was enough there that it should have got it started

How old is your ignition coil? Grounds good? Might want inspect, clean and possibly run an auxiliary ground wire from the coil to the head.
Also forgot to add that when I installed the new points and condenser on my 71 400, I also installed a new ignition coil.
Bought it all for less than 100 bucks.
A couple of rough ones I bought. Trying to decide whether to part them out or restore.
I'd restore at least the radial, heck they are mostly complete and they're near impossible to find in your bikes condition. I am still a Maico fanatic, nice score!
Dang the number 55 is a beaut.
Good deal on acquisition.
It's always a journey bringing the rough ones back -- but the end result and reward are usually the worth effort.
