Usually when I go on the Suncruz Casino boat, there is a quadriplegic woman w/limited hand arm use who plays high limit slots, $10 per pull and EASILY puts in $8,000 cash per 4 hr cruise, I and most others just know her as "wheelchair Penny." Each day she'll get a few nice wins of $1500 or $1800, but never seems as much as she puts in.

I come to find out in talking to a few people that her name is Penny Shipley

She is the largest single recipient of a cash settlement from GM for almost $20 Million dollars

"On September 30, 2003, a Nebraska jury awarded approximately $19.5 million to Penny Shipler, a 36-year-old mother left paralyzed from the neck down in a 1997 accident. She was a passenger in a 1996 Chevrolet Blazer when the vehicle was involved in an accident and rolled over. The roof crushed on Ms. Shipler causing her to suffer a complete spinal cord injury."

Basically, the roof crushed and could not support the vehicle in a roll over, jury agreed and even though GM did a short try at appeal, losing at the State Supreme Court, they finally caved and paid her.

She was a waitress with a 10 yr old son at the time (1997).
She was only a passenger and no one was drinking

Lawyer probably got half that 19.5 million.

Yeah, 50% from the research I have found.

I was told by someone while we were discussing it that she successfully sued someone else (I don't know who) for an additional $10MM, but I can't find any articles on that

But, the gambling is her entertainment and she has lots of friends on the boat. Half the time she's not paying attention to her play, but watching everyone else play while playing

Even at 5% a year invested, she makes half a million a year, and only a 15% tax rate (capital gains). She can spend a lot and not even get started on her principle balance.

My understanding, she's well invested, wisely, and doesn't mess with the principle

At that rate, she should be needing some of that free Obama healthcare pretty damn soon. Metzger can help her out if she ends up 1.7 million in debt though, just $39.95.............lol

Windfall cash winner with a lot more money than 10 Million go broke quite often.

Jack Whittaker won a $485 Million dollar lottery, I think it took him all of 5 or 7 years to lose it all. He had family and friends die from drug overdose. It seems the money just magnified his personal problems.

Here's an article about 8 lotto winners that didn't luck out so much after the lottery.
http://articles.moneycentral.msn.com/SavingandDebt/SaveMoney/8lotteryWi…

My only point is that her behavior of dumping piles of cash in a slot machine exhibit that of a person likely to become another one of those statistics of a windfall cash winner going broke.

Says you, but looks like the evidence goes against that in this situation.

Wild Assumptions coming from your observations. Give her my apologies if I have offended her with my erroneous conclusions.

The only evidence that we have to go against that is that she can still afford to play slots 6 years after her windfall of cash.

The statistics vary wildly as to whether or not she is 33% likely to go broke or 90% likely to go broke.

I know, I'm a pompous arrogant prick that thinks he knows everything when it comes to money and finance. It just doesn't make sense to me to put more money in the machine than what comes out.

Could be because I'm an accountant....or it could be because I'm not a slot machine enthusiast, because the same goes for a dirtbike, you put way more money in the machine than what comes out.

Kinda off topic but...

Dave, are those SunCruz's worth the price?

I'm not a big gambler, but we have one locally, and I keep meaning to check it out. Any info that may be helpful ahead of time?

I think they offer a locals/player card type of thing..whats that all about?

They still suck. We had to stay at South Point in Vegas due to the Horse show and the food was horrible. Had one decent dinner and Breakfast was ok . I know the better places are good but I just had to complain.
