Shoot I remember Kieth bowen doing it in the early 80s before he was pro on a downhill double that was right out of a turn. Ricky Johnson has said that kieth was the first guy he seen blitz whoops.

Back in the day, we called it "pre-jumping," and the whip was optional. We'd try to leave the jump face before the crest or lip of the jump and stay low, as if the jump was only half as big. Some guys left the ground so early, they had to throw a tabletop (whip) to clear the top of the jump. James took that to the extreme.
This is pretty much it. The technique was being used prior but James took it to another level that forced recognition of it. People had no idea how much faster you could go staying that low until they saw James doing it. So James gets credit for evolving it into a necessary craft that you need to win. Did James invent it? I think not. Did James take a little known technique and masterfully execute it in a way that nobody ever had? Absolutely!!
