Ridge,

Thanks for taking my phone call the other night. You gave me a lot of great information about Symes amputation.

if the pain and uselessness is too much tell him to go ahead and do it. losing a leg isn't that big a deal and is much easier if you have a knee or at least a long stump. they have some great prosthetics these days and those devices are always getting better.

mentally it can be difficult but everybody is different, i assume if you make the conscious decision to get it whacked you've already prepared yerself quite a bit.

Hey Ridge do you have the "phantom" pains? Buddy of mine had his leg amputated right above the knee after a horrific mx crash.. That was 5 years ago and he still gets the phantom pains every once in while. He also said every once in awhile he feels an itch on his foot( the one that got amputated) Crazy stuff!
phantom pains hit me about 3 times a year....wouldn't wish that shit on anybody. it works out ok because it feels so damn good when they stop....Smile

i almost amputated my middle finger a month ago, can't believe the fugger hung on, and it miraculously healed itself with a brace. it's a little fuggered and bent to the side, but the girly i'm dating loves the new curvature Smile

For those of you that dont know Bob, this statement should speak volumes. Bob can probably look at his buddy Magoo and keep things in perspective. Personaly I have so much respect for both of them. They both have the same mentality as my pop had.

I'm still unclear on how/why Bobby lost his leg...what happened?

I heard he got in a fight with some guy and told him..."I'm going to break my foot off in 'yer' ass...". Bobby was the most surprised when it actually happened!!!

Either that....or Bobby stuck his foot in his mouth one too many times and bit it off...

As I understand the story: In a nutshell, broke it badly racing motocross, presumably at the Pro level. I say late '70s to early 80s. Possible on a Maico. Eventually had it removed.

So, now the corrections will fly in here, but that will tide everyone over till FTE or Bobby help me out.Cool

BobbyM, how did you go from breaking both bones (tibia an fibula) to having your leg amputated? Did you completely shatter the bones or did you get an infection?

Man that sucks. I wondered because my son broke his tibia and fibula at Birch Creek MX back in 2006. He was 7 at the time and he was off the bike for almost 4 months. He's fine now. In fact, he plays baseball, football, and basketball in addition to riding.

Bobby is absolutely right on this one.....I have never experienced the phantom pains....
I made the decision to get the POS lopped off, and was completely mentally prepared for it...Spoke with a few other amputees to figure out what i was in for.
I believe this is one reason for not having phantom pains,,although i do get "sensations" The fucker itches all the time and flexing muscles in your stump,,you can feel the foot and toes move..
Learning to walk with a prosthetic was a pain in the ass,,but once you get it figured out,,its easy..

Good luck,
Erik

I had my left foot amputated (syme amputation) in 1998 when I was 16 from a moto crash and loss of blood flow. I spent 3 months in intensive care at mayo in Rochester, Mn. At the time I rode "C" class. I started riding again about 6 month later (at first with no prosthetic just trail riding with socks stuffed in a boot and duct taped it on my leg) then once my leg was healed enough to get fitted for a prosthetic I was able to start putting in laps. Anyway, it is not as bad as it sounds. I raced expert up until last yr, and never really have had any major problems. Many times something like this is easier to deal with than the constant pain of an old break or joint problems. If you want to call me at 715-563-1519 I can fill you in on some things i have learned over the years.

Yeah, I remember talking to you. Its a small world. Pretty funny how things come up years later. I got a call from Kenny Bartram and the promoter about a week before last years x games but I had just crashed at Millville the week prior and was laid up with 2 crushed vertebrae and a broken pelvis and dislocated right femur. Bad timing for that to happen. I wanted so bad to be there, that track looked like a ton of fun. I was planning on doing the extremity race this year in Michigan or wherever it is but I havent ridden all year due to being busy at work, kinda burned out on riding and I am still having problems with my hip and knee. Now i have a prosthetic on the left leg, a right leg that is half numb, two bad knees and a bad hip. My lower body is trashed but my upper body is still all there! MX is kinda hard on the body.
