July 15 (Bloomberg) -- Russian millionaires are returning to the U.S. property market, lured by distressed sales and the ruble’s rise against the dollar, lawyer Edward Mermelstein said.
“The way many look at the U.S. right now is that it’s a bargain,” said Mermelstein, who has arranged about 300 real estate deals for buyers from the former Soviet Union since 2007.
Mermelstein, 41, closed two purchases and bid for 20 more residential and commercial properties in New York and Miami for Russian and central Asia clients in the past three months, he said. That compares with no deals or offers in January, he said.
Manhattan apartment prices dropped for the first time since 2002 in the second quarter as the collapse of Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. and Bear Stearns Cos. caught up to property owners in the nation’s most expensive urban market. The ruble rallied about 13 percent against the dollar from this year’s low on Feb. 17 and 4 percent against the pound sterling from a Feb. 6 low.
U.S. sellers are cutting prices 30 percent to 40 percent from their peak in 2007, Mermelstein said in an interview in Moscow, where his firm has an office.
“All of a sudden in the last three months activity’s picked up,” he said.
More than half of the 15 or so Russians he’s helping find U.S. property are new clients, he said.
“Now that oil has settled at about $70 a barrel, there’s a little bit of a comfort level”
Despite all the current positive moods, highest since Sept 07, its an indicator of the peak of wave 2 is almost on us. Sure, the market will bounce on any sliver of positive financial news, its very thin stuff really when unemployment is increasing, businesses are closing....
Also, if anyone has bothered to notice, the way things have unfolded this year is a virtual carbon copy of the post 1929 bounce. We know what followed.
'Gold works when there's inflation, its supposedly an inflation hedge..'
Actually Gold was worth LESS during those high inflation years if worked out on parity with true market values. So the saying is really a financial myth. Bit like you Grettle.
These "I told you idiots so" topics are less about informing and more about intellectual posturing. We're all very proud that you know how to use Wikipedia.
Hey anyone know why many companies announce immediately after the close?
It looks like the title of this thread should have been "2nd wave peak coming soon...", instead of "3rd wave down coming soon..."
Your notion that the "current positive moods" is the highest since Sept. '07 is based on what?
The fear of shorting the market at these levels is not a "positive mood", and when there's a short covering rally that's not the same as trading the news cycle.
There's no rhyme or reason to your posts whatsoever as others have pointed out - You seem to know something of Elliot wave theory, but can't present a coherent case for any of the predictions (or "forecasts") that you make here. Comparing "the post-1929 bounce" with the current market is a good example.
Man, he nailed it, didn't he?
He's a genius
Pit Row
Then again, maybe not.
If you read any professional forecasters you will notice they have alternate counts up and down. 8000 was my resistance level, if it broke through that then we were forming the major trend south or the 3rd wave. You guys still have time to get your shit together.
Positive mood can be seen in recently released indicator data. At the moment they are the highest seen since the crash, dont miss read that as being at the same levels as Sept 07.
1997 I purchased a thousand plus shares of Apple. I owned an apple, stood behind them, so I thought it was a good idea. 96-97 i was pretty much living off trading stock. Fortunately I had meager needs. My dog, MX and my very, very inexpensive housing needs. My buddy who helped me out came to me, Drew you gotta buy Apple. Coming off being seriously burned from Macromedia - those guys that made Flash, lost my ass to them. I was Leary, the Mid 90's wasnt popular for tech stocks. Apple was selling for $16 a share. My buddy told me: Drew if they fold tomorrow you still make money. The stock had a worth of $17 per share. So I said ok. Had the stock for a year or so. Nada. Zilch. I had sold it off and made money elsewhere. Not thousands upon thousands but enough to play the game and be a Snowboard/MX bum. Along comes the Dot Com boom in 98. Stocks were going nuts. In 2001 Apple released this stupid little white thing that played music and called a pod. Stock was near $200 a share.
What did I learn? Park your money. Kiss it goodbye until 65. I was 30something what did I care then.
Did I ever tell you about the time I had AMD at $9?
You start playing around with tech stocks and stocks that move like that, you are playing with fire. If the can move up that quickly they can fall like a rock.
Why would you buy Apple at 15 in 2004? Why do you think that's so easy to see? If you listened to the news back then, you might have thought Apple was going belly up.
Nothing is simple when it comes to investing.
In 99, Redhat goes IPO for ~13. Of course, average joe can't get in on this. It jumps up 1000%. WHY? Insanity. Since the bust it's fluctuated in the teens and 20s. I don't even understand that. They package a product that's free....I suppose they provide support or something that keeps them going.
Good luck.
Here again you're pulling forecasts directly out of your ass. You called DJ 5000 and 3000 in March and the market proceeded to head straight up.
Just as you're doing here by claiming you forecast DJ 9100+ when you started the thread claiming exactly the opposite, you just shift your "forecast" to match headlines.
It seems you're unable to keep track of all your "forecasts" so I'll help you keep track with a spreadsheet with all your "forecasts" listed by date and index or market.
In a few months we'll post it here and see how well you did.....
