Doing a top end/fresh jug on a 2014 yz250f and the gasket kit came with new valve stem seals. So I went ahead and replaced the old ones with the new. I was wrapping up the last intake spring, retainer, and attempting to get the keepers seated properly. One keeper went past the channel of the valve got lodged a little against the valve and the other was seated correctly.

No big deal, re-compress the spring and pull em out with a magnet. That happened 2 more times before I got it right. Which had me thinking, should I just replace these keepers on this one valve? Both intakes? I know they are relatively cheap. I slept on it and ordered the intake keepers this am. Won't be in for a few days so figured I'd ask some of the pros on here, while I wait for the new ones to come in. Bike has less than a total of 50 hrs on it for some reference. Just wanting to see other experiences in this situation.

I've run keepers for a couple hundred hours. I always replace them if I'm replacing valves though, no matter how many (or how few)hours are on them.

That said, it's not going to hurt anything to replace them even if you don't need to. Like you said the cost isn't significant....and if it gives you peace of mind, so much the better

Of course. With new valves I would do the same. I was just swapping out the seals because they came in the kit. You ever get one lodged as I described? Where one keeper goes to far and binds between the retainer and valve stem, beyond the recessed area on the top of the valve stem?

Yes I have. They can be a pain to get out.

I guess I was wondering if that could do any damage to the keeper itself? I'm not sure the material of the keepers?
