2008 KTM SX144, purchased used(only a couple hours though) from a female that had it set up from the dealer when new with quite a few KTM woods/off road accessories on it. Bought it for my kid, but with luck on my side I'm the one who crashed it. Not too hard on the bike, I suffered the brunt of the impact. The front end was tweaked and the lower handlebar mount (pictured ) looked bent. Figured the bolt was obviously bent along with the small flanges on the lower mount being tweaked. Upon disassembly the threads had actually pulled out of the upper triple clamp. The odd part is that the lower bar mount bolt only threaded into the upper triple clamp about 8 mm deep. The upper triple has probably close to 20mm thread depth and it doesn't appear if any bolt has ever been any deeper into the clamp. Online I found three different heigth lowers available. Not sure if the ones on it are originals or not but they look just like the ones in the photo. The parts catalog only lists a 35mm bolt to hold them on so I'm assuming the mounting flange is all the same regardless of heigth. The bolts which appear to be originals in the bike are only 25mm in length. Did KTM screw this up or did a 25mm bolt come stock and maybe the dealer changed the lower mounts out and not use the proper bolts????? I'm sooooooooo confused.

I just put EE bar raisers on my 07 144 so I just checked the stock bolts. They are 35 mm. I have no idea where the 25 mm bolts came from.

Those appear to be the same base clamps that are on mine, what is the overall height on them?

Maybe she had shorter bar clamps put on it and took them off before she sold it to you, lost the stockers and just reused the shorter bolts that came with the shorter clamps.

The parts schematic shows a 35mm bolt stock for the 08 144.

The older forged stock top clamp/bar mounts (my 03 525) used a 25mm. The bolts share the same shallow head if I recall, so they'd look the same.

Someone screwed up, but I guess you'd have to leave it to the dealer and KTM to point fingers at one another. I can't recall whether the bar mounts are attached to the clamp before they come out of the crate for set up.

Confirmed. The longer one is the stock bolt from my 07 144. The shorter one is the stock bolt from my old 04 125SX. They are 35 mm and 25 mm respectively.

Man, some of you guys must be pack rats! Thought I was the only one with 01 YZ250F triple clamp bolts bagged for "future use". LOL Can't say I'm really concerned about pointing any fingers as I'm not the original owner. I'm sure everyone would deny anything wrong anyway. In an odd way, (being that I am still in pain!)almost glad I discovered the issue before it failed at speed with the kid on it. I can imagine as minimally as it was threaded in that it would have eventually pulled out under regular moto use. Appreciate the input. I do have new lower mounts and bolts on order, will measure them and see what length they come in at.

The rule of thumb is the depth of a steel bolt when screwed into aluminum should be twice the diameter of the bolt.
