Ok maybe not near death but.. close enough for me.

Sunday morning my wife and I took our morning walk in the hills 5minutes from our home here in southern cali. The trails we walk on range from 2' to 6' wide winding through the hills amongst the scrub brush and rocks.

As we walked along on the trail with our ipods on, turned down low to be able to hear things ( each other included ) I decided for some stupid reason when Run DMC Kings of rock came on my ipod to crank it up.

Now we come to this wide section of trail I always visualize going thru on a bike. It drops down into a gully and then back up the other side. Coming out the other side is a bit off camber to the left. There's little rain ruts coming down the left side.

I did my usual cut across the high side too braaaap my way up to the top when I finally hear my wife yelling at me. I stopped and turned back thinking maybe she hurt herself. I did a u-turn coming down the rain ruts. Now shes screaming at me too stop. so I stopped and she's yelling something else at me. Snake, there's a snake. I froze and coiled up 10' in front of me, about a foot out on the trail is one of these

I'm on a sandy/gravely off camber down hill with a 4 to 5 ft red diamond rattlesnake right where gravity wants to take me. After I cleaned my shorts. I realized that my wife and I were seperated by the serpent.

So I started picking up rocks and sticks and chucking them at Mr Snake, talk about hissing and rattleing. I actually hit it in the head and it just kept staring at me. I figured him to be pretty pissed off at this point. All I wanted was for Mr Snake to retreat back to the brush. Which it finally did and I ran back down.

Now all we can think about going back down is that there is a snake under every bush aside the trail. At one point on the way back down a good size lizard ran up the side of a rock a couple feet next to me making noise out of the brush, I can only imagine what my dance looked like to my wife.

On the way back to the house it hit me that I had just walked with in 3 feet of a full grown rattler oblivious too its presence. Thank god the wife had good ears and common sense to leave her ipod turned down low and didnt cross its path. And thank god I like cutting up the high side or I probably would of stepped right on it.

Needless to say we wont be going on the trails for awhile.. My luck that things still pissed and waiting for me. I'd be the first person to be chased down..

Most snakes are not nearly as aggressive as people want to believe. Most people get snake bit when they don't see the snake and accidentally step on them.

Right in the triangle between Atlantic, the 710 and the LA river there's a a little track where I would take my kids. We caught gopher snakes there too. The biggest was about 7'. They get huge.

My wife riding her bicycle with an ipod = accident waiting to happen. My wife walking around the neighborhood with an ipod = accident waiting to happen. I make her leave that shit at home. We were jogging the neighborhood late one afternoon and she almost got taken out by some goofy little shits blasting the streets on a four wheeler. She never heard them roaring down the street straight at her or me screaming at her to get off the road. Tried getting all pissy with me when I jerked her out of the way. Gotta be trendy though.

By the way, my youngest son would have absolutely freaked over that snake. He'd have been trying to catch it. He used to come home from checking all the ditches with snakes tucked away in the tool box of his four wheeler. The ones that didn't get loose in the house got set free in our yard.Woohoo

My friend Duane told me when he was a kid they had one of those old 10' X 10' steel sheds in their back yard. One day he went out and there was a rather large black snake coiled up inside in the top corner. He ran in the house and grabbed the shotgun and shot the poor snake. He also blew a big hole in the shed. His dad came home and when he told him the story he said his dad turned white and looked him right in the eye and said "You killed it didn't you?" Duane said "yeah dad but I put a big hole in the wall. "His dad patted him on the shoulder and said "Thats ok .....as long as the snakes dead!"

Thats nothing. One time I was following a pretty fast pro who still races and all of a sudden he was standing on his seat.

I rode up and asked WTF were you doing? and there was a nice rattler he had ran over while it was crossing.

If he reads this, he will know who he is.

I've walked over rattlers a hundred times, usually about stepping on them and then jumping back ten feet.

You shouldnt have pissed him off. Most that piss them off get bit. Back away, let them go about their business and you can go about yours. They really want nothing to do with you. Same with most wild animals.

Agreed. Women with Ipods are kidnapper van targets too.

I tell my girl to leave that shit at home as well. Funny thing is, she see's people about get plowed totally oblivious to whats going on around them, yet she still did the same thing.

She doesn't like to be wrong.

At the time we lived in Bell Gardens and had a track at the same place we caught the snakes which was just south of Clara Street.

My old house in Bell Gardens is now a parking lot for the poker club.

I grew up catching snakes, but later I became more civilized and got into wildlife photography. Of course, then I realized you can get a much better picture of the snakes if you catch them first. Here's a little guy I caught and snapped some pictures of back when I was in dental school.

Lot's of those in SE OK and a few here in the central part of the state.

When we run into a snake here around the house we catch and relocate. When my kids were young we got them each a snake to take care of so they would better understand snakes and be less likely to want to kill every snake they see.

I try to get my neighbors to call me whenever they get a snake in their yard, but they always grab a shovel instead of the phone.

Nice picture. I don't have any first hand experience with a cotton mouth but I've read they're rather ill tempered. On the other hand I have a friend that's a Waterfowl Biologist and he worked in the south while he was in school. He told me he found them to be docile......but he's also afraid of snakes so I don't know how close he really got.

It's a common mistake for many to confuse the cottonmouth with the common water snake and the water snakes tend to be much more aggressive.
I ve found the cottonmouth to a non aggressive snake also and I spent a year down in SE OK where they are very common.

I use to be a avid frog giger and have been around my fair share of cottonmouths.
