2021 CRF450R and Renthal R3 O-Ring chain?

Edited Date/Time 10/19/2021 6:07am
**UPDATE** My 2021 CRF450 has had a R3 O-Ring chain on for 20hours with modification/spacers for 20hours.

I’ve just replaced the chain on my 21 with a R3 O-ring chain and I’m concerned about the width of the chain causing issues, mainly on the crank case by the drive sprocket.

I’ve used it for an hour or so and everything is fine, I took the chain and sprocket off to check on things and the only thing I can see if that it has worn away a small bit of the case about 3mm in diameter.. I think the part it’s rubbed is a small cast defect that was sticking out a bit.

What concerns me is that I did a quick google search and found some people having issues with the last generation CRF450 17-20 and it rubbing the crank case severely.

Is it likely to start rubbing once the chain wears a bit? What can you do to solve it if it is too close, is there a spacer you can get or something?

The 2021 CRF450RX comes with an RK O-Ring chain as standard and that bike is the same bike with a few different things but frame and engine position would still be the same no?

Thanks.

I run these on my older CRFs for peace of mind (after I, too, saw case wear marks). 100s of hours later and everything is still good. No chain issues, no case issues, etc.

I had seen one of these and will make one in work but I was wondering if it would cause any issues with chain alignment etc.. but you’ve been running for 100s of hours so I’ll give it a go and it would definitely help take it off my mind thinking about rubbing and checking it all the time.

Thanks

I had the same chain alignment concern and after 3+ chains (normal wear, no issues), I am convinced it's no problem. Plus, I was surprised how positive the product ratings were on so many ratings. I'd say you're good to go!

Sometimes on the CRF's these thin spacers cause the collar in the center of the spring washer on the countershaft sprocket to crack into 3 or more pieces. Since the sprocket is sitting 1mm further outboard, the collar flexes inward in the middle when you tighten the bolt down. I used to eliminate the collar and run the bigger spring washer from the CR250 to prevent this.

Would just like to add a little update for anyone wondering if it’s okay.

My 2021 CRF450R has a had a Renthal R3 O-ring chain on for 20hours without any issues.. I didn’t need a spacer, it just fit straight on.
