Looks like someone welded over the vin and stamped into the weld.

Looks fishy to me. VIN's are 17 numbers & letters, no special characters. Plus a VIN should be straight across and not look like someone stamped it by hand. Generally the 10th character is the year.

Thought so too, but then I clicked his user name and he’s in AUS…17 digits are a US thing maybe?

If the white is original it’s a 90-96, but without seeing the whole frame I can’t get closer.

Assuming it is a US model it is a 2003 according to some info from Thumpertalk.

However the picture does not look like an aluminum frame that a 2003 would have.

Find the V.I.N. on the frame, and count 10 places from the left. The 10th digit will be a number, if its a 1 it's an 01 bike. If it's 2000 or older, it will be a letter.

2003 would be alloy (as you said) and would be a 17-digit ViN for US bikes.

Anything older than 1981 does not use the current 17 digit vin system

It can be fishy but that is also not impossible that the previous owner damaged the initial frame, had to buy a new one with no number, then a shop had to put the inital VIN back on (which could explain why it doesn't look standard).

Back to the year, I don't know, a shop or the importer should be able to help.

That VIN doesn't look correct.

CR250s used the following VIN pattern:

JH2ME (J = Japan, H = Honda, 2 = Off Road

Could be a non-US frame but even those used the same 17 digit VIN. The last sequence after the hyphen doesn't look correct. Never seen a Honda VIN end like that.

Only the US market used the 10th digit to mark the year.
OP, there is an Aus site with a list of vin numbers for each year, I will try to find it and post here.

EDIT: here's the link. The number doesn't seem to match any cr250 years, maybe I overlooked something.
