It was almost a sport in itself to just get away with it. I don’t think the sport will ever recover from what Lance and his era did. It’s crazy, if he’d just been a hair less of an asshole, he might have gotten away with it lol

All professional sports and most amateur ones are full of athletes using PEDS. That genie won’t ever be put back into the bottle.
It is absolutely staggering how dirty the sport was then. It really is a fantastic book

He once got inspected post race.
They removed his fuel tank and measured its volume.
After the scrutineers decided it was good, he threw it in the back, and drove the car back to his hauler.
His roll cage was full of fuel.
He had tons of cheats.
I've been in cycling for 30 years, pretty much from when I stopped racing MX. It's very hard to accept that what we see out of a guy like Pogacar is pure. The past few years we've all been told not eating is the new doping, being rail thin and lean like Froome and exploiting Watts/kg was the secret to success. And marginal gains, every little detail matters. Now a young Slovenian man-boy comes along, still carrying baby fat and not looking really crazy lean or ripped and completely dominating everyone. He wins the first time trial riding a relatively unaerodynamic setup in terms of bike frame and wheel tech. So much for marginal gains I guess.
I think I feel this way on the Monday after every Tour de France since 1998 (Festina affair).
