Yeah I’m in the same boat as you lol. I just bought an 04 RM250 and it’s confusing as hell compared to the YZ I used to own.

Be careful with shocks on your 03. I'm pretty sure 04 onwards is a different length (shorter).
I'm sure I've seen people use 04+ shocks but they change the lower mounting clevis to an 03 style but you might want to research this to be safe.

You've also got a bit of a dilema that 04+ shocks are designed for a completely different style linkage to that on the 03, so you may find the valving to be wrong and it could end up being worse.

One big thing I've found over the years since this thread took off.... you cant beat OEM!

I tested between the standard shock and the Ohlins, which was re valved specifically for the bike, and I preferred the standard shock.
The RMZ450 link also got dumped and replaced for stock.
I've also ditched the A-Kits and KYB 48mm forks I trtied in favour of standard 47mm RM forks.

It's really fun to play around and build a cool one off bike, but in the interest of performance you're better off keeping it pretty standard. I think the main issue is, especially with suspension, is that no one has much data or solid testing on RMZ/A-Kit etc stuff on the 2 strokes, so you've got to put in a lot of time and testing to get it right. Where as the standard stuff has been around for 15+ years and virtually every good tuner will have a great shim and spring set up for the stock suspension that will work well to your needs, first time.

My RM is now virtually stock apart from a Pro Circuit pipe, V-Force, Flywheel Weight and Hinson clutch and its awesome to ride, it just doesn't turn as many heads!

The suspension is good the problem is the aluminum is so deeply scared I don’t think I can just replace that yea I can have Racetech rebuild it but I’m worried about how deep the damage is looks like my only option is to buy entire shock assembly oem

Have you tried searching for just the shock body or asking whoever rebuilds KYB how much one is? Should be a part number somewhere you can search.

Sorry to bump this old thread, but to go along with op's original question, does anyone know of any brand that makes chain adjuster blocks, aside from the red tusk ones, for the last gen RM's? Does anyone make a lollipop style one?
I'm currently rebuilding my 2005 RM125 and I feel the tusk ones will add too much red to this build of mine. I'm looking for blue, black, or even mag colored ones. Preferably the lollipop axle block type, but I'm 99.9% those don't exist.
Thanks for the help guys!

Couldn’t you buy the tusk and strip the ano? I know that’s a pain in the ass but I myself am a 07 RM parts finder sometimes you have to get creative to get stuff the way you want…🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️

Not sure if you ever found them, but MX Bonz has them in black and I can vouch for them. Have their blocks on both my 125 and 250.
