I was in the process of rebuilding my top end. I’ve never done it before. I figured I’d try it myself to learn before I paid a shop to fix it. Got it all done but before I put the valve cover on, I wanted to check the timing. I tried to turn it over with a the socket to get the marks lined up, but I can’t get it to move. Also can’t get the kick start to fully lock. The socket will move but not a full rotation. Stuck something down the spark plug hole and the piston does move up and down. Any ways to fix this and/or ways to help check timing. I can’t find anything in the manual of what marks go where for timing.

Valves are hitting the piston. Your timing is off or your piston is in backwards.

Any tips or ideas that’ll help with setting timing. The piston isn’t in backwards. I just can’t find anywhere that’ll tell me anything about timing or where the 2 marks on the sprocket for the cam are supposed to be facing.

Most likely timing off. However, one time I had a cylinder dowel pin drop in and sit on top of piston. And when I tried “dry rotation” it would bottom out (similar to what you are getting)

I believe it’s just the timing. I’ve done every thing the right way. This is honestly the first time I’ve cracked any part of an engine open so I’m pretty new to this. I can’t find any where that’ll help with the timing. Even on the service manual online. Either I’m just blind, or it’s not in it.

I tried looking for places that’ll tell me. Even In the online service manual. Either im blind or it’s not in there. Seems like the older Honda’s are nothing alike on the inside of the motor.

Piston TDC, two marks on cam sprocket should line up with head top surface, markings should line up on clutch side check hole, stator markings should be visible from stator side check hole

That's from crf250 2015, assuming same for 450

Thank you....I believe I’ve gotten it figured out. I think I was trying to put the cam in the wrong way first of all. (Shoulda paid more attention when I took it apart). The timing marks on the sprocket are supposed to be aligned with the cam holder mating surface. I believe that’s the only difference between the 250’s and 450’s. Found all of this in the service manual online. I guess I was blind lol.

Never cracked open any part of the engine on any bike I’ve owned. Wanted to try to Learn it. If I fail, it’ll definitely be going to a pro. Gotta learn somehow.

It’s going to a shop now lol. Recently moved to a new area so my usual shop is pretty far. The shops in my area are really sketchy. I appreciate all the info from everyone.
