Didn't someone ask this question last winter and set off a firestorm between the "it'll kill your motor because it passes dust" and the "it makes more torques and horsepowers" camp?

Not sure...if there was I missed it.
I did see a pic of a Kawi with one installed.....It could have been one of the pro circuit bike's, but I couldnt see the number plate in the pic.

I know a guy who uses one. He doesn't ride much though. I do bike work for him from time to time. I don't like it. It's not any easier to use than the foam ones. It's heavier and I have no idea if it's clean or not.

They are no good in the mud. Good for your streetbike, but I wouldn't run one on a dirt bike.

Cotton gauze (K&N) filters are documented for having both very high flow and rather poor filtering capabilities when it comes to very fine media (dirt particles).

One of the Diesel websites did a scientific test a few years back, using everything from oil analysis to secondary filtration systems, that's what they came up with. Vehicles using the K&N style filters would consistently have higher levels of silica (sand particles) than vehicles using paper type filters. I don't believe they tested oiled foam filters though.

We bought a used bike that came with one on it, let alot of dirt go through so much you could see bunch of dirt in the intake boot, switched back to foam no more dirt. Didnt really notice any power difference. The k&n didnt really seem to seat right.

i don't really care for them in the dirt .I have alot of atv riders that run them with no problem .One of them that races had 92 hours on his before we did a complete rebuild and the motor still looked good inside. The cylinder looked good with little wear to be seen after i ran a hone through it a few times but i will stick with my foam filters

When I pulled the K&N out of my buddies CRF450 it sailed really good into the garbage can.
