I called in last night and I was caught off guard by how fast they got to me so my thoughts were a little (lot) disjointed and I may or may not have sounded like a moron.

I said that I've seen some people talking about the season should have an asterisk but in my opinion it had all the elements that a legit championship season needs.

Zach had dominant performances at Red Bud and at WW Ranch, he overcame adversity at Spring Creek, and when needed he managed the championship at Pala. If that's not 100% earning a championship I don't know what is.

It is the new norm for folks to downplay championships. What folks have lost sight of, when was the last championship (SX or MX) that didn't have a handful of title contenders out with injury? That is also the new norm.

I agree, Zach did everything right this year, even when things were rough.

9 races is certainly enough to constitute a legitimate championship. The east/ west coast championships are less races than this and their legitimacy is not questioned. Mathematically, Tomac could have dug out of his hole, AC wasn’t looking good at first but he had time to climb back up. Everyone had the same amount of races.

You'd surely have to asterisk many/most of the championships in history, as prior to '94 the 500/250 was a split series, usually with fewer than 9 races each

I heard the call. You made a valid point. Surviving bike issues, staying healthy and being consistent will never be as sexy as RC winning EVERY race. Or Eli's "beast mode". Dominant riders have tainted our perception of a champion. When a rider makes a grind look easy, we take it for granted (IMO).
A shortened season + the mudders at LL's were additional factors that Zach managed perfectly. AC didn't get consistent in time to cover the point spread. ET3 destroyed his Kawi at LL's. Marv and Barcia also not consistently finishing where they needed to make a run at Zach.

Zach didn't just win it because et3 and ac9 had dnfs at LL.

He did what all champions do. He rode hard and smart, and when he had a bad day, he minimized the damage as he did in mn.

He had the speed to run with any of them and beat all of them in head to head racing, an example would be tomac in florida.

Only some kind of punk ass whiney bitch would try to minimize what he did this year and "question" the legitimacy of his championship.

Exactly, when he had a bad day he minimized it. The sayings that you win championships on your bad days is true.

I agree with you OP, no asterisk needed and anyone saying that takes away from the work the riders put in.

I saw someone ask on social media "how many times has the rider leading after round 9 won the title?" I looked it up and the most recent instance I could find of a rider not winning the title when leading after the ninth round was CP377 in 2010 when Canard won the title. That was across both classes. I think 9 rounds is a pretty solid sample size. The riders all knew it was 9 rounds when they started the season.

Whether they knew or not is not the question. They all started with zero points and ended where they did. In 2020, there was no excuse to "manage" anything, as none of the rounds were guaranteed. Everyone should have collected every point possible at every round, and I believe they did.
