Looking to pick up a new bike (2020 model) this fall. I race expert/AA east coast off-road aboard a 17 yz250f. The yzf was my first 4 stroke in a decade and I must say that I’m not really jelling with the engine break or jumpy EFI throttle.

I’m looking to get back on a 2 stroke and have my heart set on a 300. The dilemma is that my local dealer has a fair offer on a 2020 350xcf (no 300s) and I’m wondering if the initial Opening of the throttle is any smoother than my yzf??? (still jumpy even with G2 smoother cam) or if the engine break is any less on these late Ktms??

I’m thinking I will stick with a 300, but I just thought I’d ask.

Also, anyone know of any dealers with some left over 300s??

I know where you can get a new 2021 Husky TX 300 for $9400 OTD in WV. Send me a PM and I can give you the dealers info.

I have raced both a lot. I'm faster on the 350 but the 300 is more fun. I will say I have not spent much time on the TPI. If your races are more open then the 350 is faster. More technical and the 300 is better. Pretty sure there are no leftover 20's.

I’ve ridden the new TPI 300 (both husky and KTM) back to back with a newer 350. The 300 gave me way more confidence and felt way more maneuverable. I would pick 300tpi over any other offroad bike I have ever ridden, i prefer the husky between the two but they are both amazing.

What do you prefer about the husky?

I will always vote for a 2-stroke. I don't have the slightest clue how to ride fast in the woods, but I sure wouldn't want to do it on an uncomfortable bike. You said yourself you aren't gelling with the engine braking - that's my biggest complaint with the thumpers.

If you're a two stroke guy you're a two stroke guy.

A tuned 350 xc-f is the best race bike out there for east coast off-road but being happy and having fun is more important. Plus, a modern 300 can still win a race.

I was riding an older 250 2 stroke and "upgraded" to a 2018 KTM 350 XCF early this year. Bike was completely setup for the type of offroad racing I do and I thought it would be perfect. After 6 months of racing and trying to adjust to it, I gave up and traded it for a 2018 KTM 300 XC and couldn't be happier. The guy I traded with wanted to get back on a 4 stroke so it's definitely personal preference. My bike still has a carburetor and there is a bit different feel with the newer TPI bikes but much more similar than a FI 4 stroke.

I've raced 4 strokes in the past so it wasn't that I wasn't familiar with them but I just feel better and faster on the 300.

Your riding type is crucial. In GNCC nobody runs 2t's in XC1 successfully (or 350's except KR). In Extreme Enduro nobody runs 4t's successfully. Traditional enduro is somewhere in between, but in the NEPG 2t wins are rare. If you are racing to win... looks like a 4t. You have been on an MX model and the XC's and E's are more tame.

Beta makes a 350 and 390, Sherco has a 300 if you are in tight technical conditions. Both have more rideability.

Pretty sure Kailub Russell won most or all of his GNCC titles on a 350, right? Not many other top guys on them, but I believe he has been on one for years.

That being said, 300 tpi all day long for me...

I just raced my 250xc tpi for the first time this past weekend. 2.5 hr woods race. I have previously had a yz250 and a 350 and the XC tpi is hands down the best and easiest bike I’ve ever ridden. It ran flawlessly the whole time and was just awesome. There really wasn’t anything I would want or change on the bike and I can’t wait to race it again. It’s also pretty fun on an Mx track.

I had 2019 300w tpi. Wonderful no vibration smooth engine that never stalled (but always had a lean feel). PDS still didn't feel right to me. Had a chance to do a killer trade deal for a 2020 350xcf...BEAST of an engine (map1 or 2! but especially in map 2) map1 is actually nice and smooth offroad...super fun bike and MUCH happier on mx tracks with it. Offroad so far it is good as well! They went to a 1 finger easy pull single spring clutch in 2019 i believe, and i have yet to stall the bike in offroad situations. Im at only 5.5hrs so far, and can say without a doubt I much prefer the linkage rear suspension. Up front I just had Checkpoint Offroad install a spring fork kit (Lucky carbon) and will be riding the bike this weekend...can't wait!

I just switched from a YZ250FX to a 21 Husky TX300. I have owned 2 KTM 350’s. Also just had a 20 FX350 demo for a bit. I like my 250 FX more than the 300 and 350 for open stuff. For more tight technical I like the 300. Not really gelling with the Xact fork yet but I will be modding them regardless over the winter. I think 250F’s are great offroad race bikes.

Be sure and let us know how the Carbon's work off road?

I found the 350 engine braking massive compared to the Yamaha 250.
Surprised the off idle throttle was such a big issue for an AA rider. It’s usually less experienced guys without good throttle control that have issues. You can make it a lot better with a different map. Mine was never an issue.

I have a 20' 450xcf coming off of a couple yz450s. I just did a 50 minute GP last weekend. I do wish I had a 350, It was too tight and close for the 450 power/gearing. No input on the 300, but my vote is for the 350.

Nonsense. The 300 TX/XC is perfectly capable and a great bike for anyone racing offoad. He won't go wrong on a 300 or 350. They're both really great bikes. If I was running GNCCs I'd probably go with a 350. But I do GNCCs, traditional HS and hard enduro. The 300 is great for all that. The 350 is a disadvantage in tighter HS races and hard enduro.

You all are giving me lots to think about. To clarify, I would say I am faster in the four stroke (as most of us seem to be) but I guess just always felt more comfortable on a 2 stroke.

The engine breaking always bugged me going down hill. It was never an issue anywhere else.

Could also be a Ktm thing as I’ve always had Ktms

National level moto guys are alway trying to smooth out their power. It’s no different in the tight woods.

Actually the majority of top guys in XC1 at a GNCC are all on 350’s. Kallib Russell,Ricky Russell,Ben Kelly,Josh Toth and Thad Duvall all ride 350’s.

Yeah no doubt, I just don’t know too many advanced riders that had an issue with the YZ250F.

Just can speak about the SX/SXF Models, after 20
Years of Two Stroke i switch to a 350 SXF last September.
7 month later i go straight back to a KTM 300 SX.

The 350 is a good bike but for me it was to heavy, more noticeable when i ride Enduro
300SX is that much lighter and and i was suprised on how easy it is to ride .

Expected a Hard hitting Two Stroke Monster but it isn‘t.

My nonsense comment was regarding the riding type being crucial. The 300XC is a fantastic and capable bike for any offroad type of riding.

All I have owned is a 4 stroke since the YZ 400 first came out. I would suggest a 300TX or TC and enjoy the power, light weight and lest costly repair bills.

You gotta ask yourself why the dealer is out of 300's yet has an abundance of 350 at a discounted price.
Also if maintenance cost is a factor the 300 wins hands down, you could get lucky with the 350 and you could also have a catastrophic failure.
