Feel like I should hang it up, but I can’t

Edited Date/Time 8/9/2020 5:45am
Blew my left knee out last week, blew my right knee out when I was 16, broke my femur at 19. I’m self employed. 29 years old. Babies will be here before I know it. If I know what’s good for me I’ll stop riding. But I don’t think I could do that. I stopped riding for 7 years. Got back into it early last year and I love it more now than I used to. Really focused on getting back into shape this year and was feeling awesome on the bike. Top 3 every weekend in 25+ won my last race. I guess I need to just back it down and ride well within my limits. I’m still young enough that I want to be the best I can be. But I need to swallow my pride and just have fun. Anyone else run into this little dilemma around 30 years old or so?

I'm glad #199 didn't hang it up. Do what makes you happy knowing your limits. Your family needs you to work on Monday.

Everybody feels the same as you as we get older. Maybe not the "hang it up" part, but definitely the "I've got responsibilities" part.
Backing it down is very hard, a friend of mine stopped entirely because he couldn't. You are your best judge and you ultimately must make the decision that's works for you.
Good luck with your decision.

Family, injuries, work, bills and other responsibilities are what have always kept me from racing. Even not racing I’ve been severely injured. I took about eight years off before returning. I’ve just toned it down and continue riding with my family and friends. We do woods, poker runs throughout Washington state. Desert 100 etc. I do a trip to So Cal every two years to camp and ride in Hungry Valley. Not racing, just having fun on a bike.

Back it down a bit, ride mx for fun and hit some local harescramble races. You'll never look back. I race on a limited basis now and mainly ride with friends. I've met a really solid group of guys I ride with on the weekends and its a blast. I wouldn't change my years racing for anything mainly because of the time I spent with my dad but I really do have more fun doing what I do now.

I have quit every time I have gotten hurt in my head. But always decide I want to ride one last time. That one last time goes bad as I am scared and ride horrible. So I keep riding till I feel I am ready to quit. Seems that day just never happens then. Never sell your stuff when you want to quit the feelings change once you heal,
I now accept that some days I just will not feel like riding or riding as well as i can. Other days i will feel young again and take chances and be competitive .

Once you have riding blood in your body , it is hard to give it up , no matter how much of it you have spilled. I’m a proponent of wearing the best safety gear that you can get. And have insurance to replace your income when needed. I was an hourly worker in Ca, so my most recent disability payments were about $1200 a week. I was able to provide for my family when I was hurt and could not work. I am almost twice your age and have gotten out of it for years at a time for other action sports , but once it’s in your blood .............ride on young man !

Don’t stop, face it you’re not going to be making a living racing so ride within your limits. You know you have babies on the way and work on Monday, ride accordingly and chances are you’ll be lining up with your kid in 14 or so years!

Probably not popular opinion but you can find other hobbies that fill the void.

I quit riding in 08 for about 8 years from ages of 18 to 26. Currently 30

In that gap, i built a rock crawler and got into that as a replacement hobby.

For me, it's just as fun except i kept building, breaking, fixing, repeat and got burnt out on the constant project. Met great new people along the way.

Sold it when i left Texas, bought a supermoto a year later and then when my wife and i were dating she wanting to ride dirt bikes so sold that and got back into it.

Starting to get the itch on and off to get back into it, just not a good time to drop the funds for another toy when we currently have 5 bikes between us.

Another option is another type of riding. i.e. Woods instead of track, trials riding is way more fun than i expected and fills some of the rock crawling void for me. Teaches a different skill set and helps with trail riding.
