ktm 50sx wont fire.

I have a 2014 ktm 50sx I am working on and cannot get it to fire. Checked fuel and that is good. Compression number is in spec. Has spark and new plug. Fresh filter. I don't even get so much as a small sputter. Owner said he has only ran it a few times this year and always started hard cold but has never not started and always started easy once it was going. Any suggestions where to look next?

Sorry, forgot to mention that. No issues visible that I could see. I did spray all the jets and orifices down liberally with carb cleaner. Still nothing. Tried to eliminate the carb altogether and dump a little fuel in the cylinder itself and nothing. Plug is wet in all scenarios.

Noted the new plug, but are you sure it's getting spark? Pull the plug; leave it connected to plug-cap and hold it to something metal (the cylinder exterior should work nicely) and kick it over. You will see spark at the electrode if it's working correctly. Post results.

Also, check the reeds/reed cage.

Yup, its got spark. Held it to the frame, nice blue, strong spark. Reeds and cage I have not checked. It had a vforce cage and reeds installed last season but I will check. Maybe cracked pedal?

If you got a meter read the ohms on the stator, should read 500 ohms (+/- 50), These bikes are known to have stators issues. If that is good and you have a good spark then back to the carb.

Hate to say this but have you done a top end on the bike? I had a KTM50SX did a top end and they bike did not start worth a crap after. Found out KTM’s are very fussy if the cylinder is not decked correctly. Once I decked the cylinder the bike started prefect all the time

If you still have the stock reed cage and she is in functional condition, swap out the VForce and test.

Finally got this figured out. Clutch was dragging. Adjusted the clutch and it started first couple kicks. Thanks for helping me troubleshoot.

Here is what I found with mine it is going to sound crazy but it works after sitting for the Winter in Wisconsin. I bounce it on the front tire 5-6 times puts gas into the engine starts right up and once it is started in the spring I have no problems starting it all season. You can prove this out if you don't want to bounce on the front tire put some gas right in the cylinder through spark plug hole as see if you can get it to pop.
