Hello, for those in SoCal how many places offer services to clean motorcycle frames for restoration or preparing to repaint? Looking to clean the dirt out inside of a a steel KTM frame so I can then correct the surface rust inside and proceed with paint/paint prep.

Any body shop should be able to do it for you. Might even consider having a powder coat place strip it and recoat it for you. Youll want powder coat anyway. Not paint.

So no help here, all those looking for answers related to original question, not a whole lot of options out here in California, closer to non. Most places that appear could aid in cleaning and correcting the rust refuse to accept "motorcycle frames" because of costs and contamination to their equipment.

May take some serious searching(now I think the best route would be to pursue automotive restoration services), but after a few calls and searches I ended up cleaning the inside of the frame myself with picks, brushes, parts washer, power washer, elbow grease. Was some work, and a bit of a compromise, but reviewing the frame in detail most of the tubes are sealed(mind a bolt hole on the shifter side of the frame that exposes the inside of a lateral tube), two gussets at the bottom near the peg mounts with two drain holes are a pain to remove all the dirt and knock off the rust from, center joist tube that mounts the tank roller studs is a tight and awkward fit inside and near impossible to completely address, the large gusset panel at the top is large enough to clean inside out and doesnt accumulate much rust, and finally the front stem tube is large enough to clean and scrape rust off but I've noticed they accumulate the most rust, the rust is focused on the joint between that front lower stem and the steering tube(you can inspect this on your bike looking up the open frame tube just above the exhaust). Scraped and groomed surface rust areas, degreased and cleaned frame, rinsed with pressure washer and dried, applied rust converter chemical with aerosol product throughout frame. Now I can resume a practical route with sandblasting and paint, the rust is reduced, converted and sealed.

Ideally it would be easiest to remove the dirt with an ultrasonic cleaner, then address the rust, but this was not possible for me.

Inside the frame is tricky. Sounds like you made it work though.

You could have soaked the whole frame in rust remover overnight. But that’d be a lot of rust remover to buy
