Bulged a disc when I shorted a landing a couple weeks ago. Not even sure when I'll be able to ride again now. Good day for riding too, and Albany can be fun at times. Hit and miss on layout and prep.

it definitely changed over the years. When I started in 87ish the layout would be different weekly, prep was almost always great, and in the summer there would be cool sections in the woods in the back. Later it seemed like the layout didn't change as much and prep suffered. I think there was a loss of focus on mx when the sand drags and such came in (are they still doing that?). It was still the closest track for me, and I spent a ton of time there. Including knocking myself out at least once and a broken leg another time.

Wed nights at Albany used to be so fun, the whoop section was bad ass. Why don't very many tracks build good whoops anymore?

Liability. Tracks won't build them cause mortals can't ride them.

I see more people hauled off in the whoops at Washougal than from all the other parts of the track combined. It's the only track I know of that builds and keeps serious whoops, and they hurt people on a regular basis. 95% of the riders can't blitz them. I'm happy to double thru without crashing. Once I actually tripled out but it was sketch. It was more an arm-pump whisky throttle than on purpose anyway Smile

Real humbling experience coming out of that right hander for the first time! I haven't ridden there in probably close to 20 years and those are still to this day the biggest whoops i have ridden! Tried skimming once and was quickly reminded that my C class ass needed to double thru them Smile

Local tip: they do prep the track but it dries and blows out quick into hard pack so get there early if you want it prepped. Sometimes tho we’l get Lucky and ryan will till it up halfway through the day

Look at that "till". They use a shitty paddle tiller that only does the top 2" and leaves hard pack visible underneath. Since they almost never rip, there's no place for the water to store and release as the day goes on. When they water mid-day it just gets slick. You have to rip deep, water deep, then till the top 6", all done night before. Otherwise the clay here turns to shit. I ride there 4-6 times a year and the prep is never better than average, and usually it's a D in my book.

Yes, I know how to prep. Shot below is one corner of my track after a full prep. You don't see any hard pack under the loam. It's there, but it's a foot down. On this day the track stayed like that, same loam and moisture level, for almost 4 hours under pretty heavy use. And boy did we have some good ruts. I'd love to have a shot at prepping Albany my way. Me and Ben could make it f-ing epic.

Albany has a unique dirt that has enough sand in it that it doesn't get nearly as hard slick as all the other local tracks. it gets hard but there's still way more traction that Washougal or Mt view

That is true, but man, with that sand content the track could be way better prepped. It should loamy goodness since it's not pure clay. Washougal and MountainView prep can leave a lot to be desired many days. I guess I'm just a picky old man. Smile

I made a video back in 2003 or 2004 of Albany pac west. I have since lost it, but it was an awesome track back then. haven't been there since 06.

Here's that same corner later in the day (like 2 PM) after it had dried out a bit. We did a quick till during lunch and the moisture is gone from on top, but you can see how much moisture is underneath even 5+ hours into the ride day. The weather helped a lot - calm, 65, some clouds. We'd last watered the night before so it's all about the rip and getting that water down deep. The rip makes prep time 2x but it's critical. My boy just loves blowing this corner up as you can see.

If I was rich that's all I'd do - prep tracks. I like it more than riding sometimes. I really dig it when its perfect and people come up and tell me how much fun they are having.

Of all the tracks I've ridden, Albany is by far my least favorite. Prep is garbage. Layout is garbage. And now even the jumps are garbage. Disclaimer, I havent been there since 2017 but i dont think it's gotten any better. The best prep i rode was 2003 four stroke nationals there but it rained and was muddy.

There really isn't a track in the NW that preps with a plan and logic. I totally agree on ripping deep for water and letting it soak in. You have to get it inside the dirt & "trap" it. Mt View prep has become dangerous. I could write a novel on what needs to change there (imo) & I love the place. But it's another case of only tilling the top couple inches and leaving hardpack underneath. False sense of security. My track is same way if I only till it.
If more tracks spent a bit more thought on initial prep they would do less during the day & it would hold up better...

PIR hasn't been really good since the early 2000's also. The double tables in the middle, the gap jump after the finish double, those were good jumps and separators, shoot PIR has basically been the same since like 2004. I Was able to jump everything on the track on my BBR 50. PIR deals with the same problem, not ripped deep enough, only has ruts on the exit of corners (usually only one rut, maybe 2) and has a hard base underneath that doesnt get touched. Solution, rip tracks deeper, water the night before heavily, 1st practice should be Pro and Intermediate riders to develop the lines and corners of the track properly.
