ohlins cartridge insert for WP AER 48 on KTM 450sxf

Edited Date/Time 5/27/2020 9:40pm
I see a lot of content reviewing day soggio, mx-tech, WP conevalves, kyb kits, etc but nobody has posted about Ohlins cartridges. Has anybody actually used these before?

Thanks!

I can’t speak for the cartridge kit but the ohlins fork is leap and bounds better than the aer fork and as good as anything out there for motocross, I’d imagine same goes for the cartridge kit

I prefer the kit in WP tubes. At least 2014-2015 the ohlins tubes was to flexy and made the bike feel long and diffuse feedback. But heard riders experience the same this year. Feels like ohlins tubes are designed for aluminum chassis

Have you ridden other A-Kit stuff or the WP XACT PRO or cone valves?

I just switched my aer over to ohlins ttx 22 cartridge from coppersmith, it's pretty dang good, I posted on thumpertalk about it, I had the mx tech midvalve setup which helped but was not what I was looking for, the ohlins is a pretty solid product, really like the feel of it over a broader range compared to the aer.

I rode an Ohlins fork/shock set up by Noleen on a 19 Husky250f Back to back with my 19 KtM 350 that has Cone valve and Trax.

The Ohlins were very impressive, they found a really plush set up.

How does it compare to the cone valves? and do you have to latest XACT PRO or the prior model? The problem I noticed with the AERs is the same thing everyone says, on slap down they are very harsh. Also, how is your traxx on acceleration bumps? On my track, I have one turn where the bumps are so bad my vision blurs with the stock shock

I have the new XACT Pro on my 350. But last years version on my 125. The year of the fork doesn't matter, it's who sets up the valving makes the biggest difference. I really like my setting from ENZO, they actually remove the cones and add shim valving because I wanted to plusher setting.

I've also heard very good things from every person who has had Powerband racing set up Cone Valves.

Noleen in So Cal is the only one I've tried Ohlins from. And again, I was very impressed with what they did.

What do you like the best? Do you have coatings (kashima or dlc) on your WPs?

It's not that simple to say which is best because the WP XACT Pro (They call HQ Coating looks like Chrome). My older WP CVs(on 2016 125) have black DLC lowers and these forks are set up for me, my bikes and riding style.

The Ohlins are on my buddies bike, who is taller and heavier than me. All the forks are very good and I wouldn't hesitate to ride any of them, just need to adjust to my liking.

I rarely ride forks out of the box and never touch them. I like to tinker and mess with clickers.

What is your budget and do you like to adjust your forks or set it and forget it? This can help me suggest which route might be best for you.

My son had a set on his 350, really liked them. Plush with good bottoming resistance. At 130 pounds he's really sensitive to how a bike feels on stutter bumps (not enough lead in his ass to keep the bike planted!). He said they weren't amazing, but were worlds better then the air forks.

I'm putting them into a 17 125SX, but won't have a ride report for a couple of weeks. And unlike my son, I'm really slow so likely won't be a great judge of how well they work.

I've found us slow guys can really tell how well suspension resists bottoming though. I case things loads.

I don't have a budget, but I don't want to buy something where there is a clear advantage with something else due to technology rather than valving or clickers.

In my current fork (stock AER 48) I've changed the air levels and clickers and have not managed to find a setting where I have sufficient bottoming resistance and a comfortable slap down.

I'm 6'2" and 225 and am building my skill back up so I am dealing with a lot of over and under jumping things right now.
