Broken Wrist

I broke my navicular in my mid 20’s. (1980’s) Non-displaced. 10 weeks with an arm cast. Another month off the bike, then started riding again. Never been a problem.

that was in 2012, all recovered just other issues like being old.

Shattered my scaphoid 17 years ago. Couldn't even pin the sucker together it was so grenaded. Luckily it 'healed' but it took 6 months or so and the bone looks like a deformed golf ball now. Still hurts to this day and lost a good deal of flexibility in the joint. It's my throttle hand too.

I highly, highly recommend getting a Mobius X8 wrist brace. I can't ride without it and the few times I've had too because I left it out of my gear bag, I could only ride maybe 10 total laps before I couldn't even stand to put my hands on the bars and the next day my wrist would be in excruciating pain...like can't even turn a door knob. With the brace, my wrist will still be a little sore after a full day of Moto'ing, but totally manageable. My insurance even covered like 95% of the cost for the Mobius with a prescription from my doc. It doesn't inhibit my riding or throttle control at all. K Roc runs them on both wrists and we all know what he did to his arms, wrist and hands.

Best of luck healing, and keep up the PT and make sure to stretch and flex that wrist to the point of tears everyday so that you keep as much flexibility as you can.

Broke mine 2 years ago, when I was 36. My wrist was dislocated and all of those small bones were a complete jigsaw puzzle. The surgeon (who only does hand surgery) said he sees an injury as bad as mine once or twice a year.
The scafoid with the screw took 6 months to heal completely. I'm lucky the bone didn't die. I didn't ride for nine months. I don't have much ROM, and it aches most of the time.
All I'm looking forward to now is early onset arthritis. Yay.

I should also add, that I broke my scaphoid on the other hand when I was 18.
No surgery, 8 weeks in cast, made a full recovery and it doesn't bother me at all now.

So I guess I got lucky when I was younger, and not so lucky the second time around.

Yeah, the arthritis is REAL. Like I noted in post above, 17 years post shattering (I'm 39 now) the arthritis has kicked in and sucks. My wrist actually feels thicker and more "firm" if you will than my non-broken side when I squeeze it from top to bottom. It's a super shitty injury that has ended a lot of pro careers for such a tiny bone. Wrists are no joke. A beautiful design yet flawed-glitch in human biology.

I smashed my wrist up pretty badly and had it plated and screwed when I was 18. It was around two months recovery and then probably six months where it felt weak. I am now 33 and it doesn't really bother me but it's definitely not perfect. It can be quite crunchy and it gets sore at times.

Yeah, mine is starting to feel like that now, and it's only been about 2 years.
I still ride and race (love the mobius brace) but I wonder how long I will be able to keep on working as a mechanic. It really concerns me.

But I’m getting some conflicting answers on recovery and all that. Has anyone here had this surgery? What was you’re recovery time? How quickly were you back on the bike? I know everyone is different but just trying to get a baseline.

Breaking this bone can mean a lot of things. If you break it one way and disrupt circulation, surgery is a must. Break it a different way, and no surgery required. The good thing is this is a super common fracture. Any experienced hand and wrist surgeon has a ton of experience with this fracture.

I am lucky. Fractured my scaphoid on left wrist, 100% recovery, no surgery. A year later, grade 4 (comminuted + intra-articular) fracture of my right wrist. That means the bone was mush/exploded, and fractures went through the joint surface. Again, 100% recovery thanks to the hot shot docs at UC Davis in Sacramento.
