This was supposed to be a clean up and sell bike but I can't leave anything alone if it's in my garage for more than 10 minutes so now I'm in full build mode.

I did an 03 from the frame up two years ago that was awesome so I'm back at it again. Bike was a bit neglected/dirty so I started by tearing everything apart and splitting the cases to have a look at every inch of the bike.

Overview:
-clean everything that is usable, frame, cases, etc
-rebuilt/rejetted carb
-New Showa SFFair forks (3 pounds lighter than the stock cr forks)
-Neken CRF clamps (red)
-2019 CRF front plate/fender/fork guards
-New 2018 CRF front brake and 260mm rotor
-OEM crank
-Wossner top end
-Millennium cylinder plating and head mods
-New clutch
-9 billion new OEM parts like bearings/seals/gaskets/fasteners where needed

Starting point (as purchased), am also posting updates as I slowly do stuff on instagram: righthandgo

This has been super slow due to traveling and just other stuff going on, not feeling like I need to rush...

Some more pics of the beginnings, the theme of this post is FILTH .

Entire front end is CRF/brand new other than some Neken CRF triple clamps. They were in super good shape OTHER than a broken bolt in a fender mount (of course they were listed as "excellent condition!"). Finally drilled and extracted the broken bolt, psyched on that because I got an estimate of 200+ to have a shop get it out!

2019 CRF front end

new OEM bearings/seals

brand new Showa SFF TAC forks

Same wind of safety wire I've had since the 90s, I bought while racing a yz85!

Having a baby soon, covid-19 and all kinds of other life has had this project sitting in my garage forever. Finally did some stuff this past week and got the bottom end together. I had ordered like a billion OEM parts last year and then needed 1 more bearing for water pump and it just came in the other day.

These builds are very inspiring. I am working on my first build, a 2003 CR125. I have never done this king of thing before and am just about to pull the motor from the frame. Then its on to cleaning everything!

Can't wait to see more!

Post some pics! I’m thinking about a cr125 build too. I’m having a hard time finding a bike but hopefully this summer will bring some out!

Made a build thread. Will be cool to have the build and my experience documented somewhere too.

Thanks for the kind words! Unfortunately, this one will be for sale after a lot of hard work when completed (baby coming any day now).

If he’s not he either is super meticulous or really likes nice tools.
I had to damn near mortgage my house but I’ve got every size of them they sell.
But then again I use them all day.

I just do this garage stuff for fun on bikes, trucks and buddies bikes sometimes. I have a motley crew of tools, only 2 of the Snap-On torque wrenches!

What was the process to cleaning the engine?
Too much time with a combo of washing, scotchbrite pads, some sanding and buffer wheel. It's not perfect but worlds better than the stains and discoloration it had.

Yep same thing I did on mine. Get a Dremel with some wire wheels and buffing wheels and it goes pretty quick.

Had a kid last Monday but was able to do a little tinkering. Put the motor and carb in, cut the airbox holes for my inserts and hooked up the clutch/throttle cables, woohoo. Also did some “custom” decals for the FMF silencer Grinning

My cylinder should be back from Millennium Tech any day now. got a 2020 wheelset I’ll be using. Front is mounted up with new rubber and the rear needs to be cannibalized. Fun fact: the 2020 crf rear mounts up fine on the CR with the exception of the sprocket. It’s like an 1/8” offset too far outboard.

yes that is a known fact about the changes in the CRF bikes. You will create a lot of excess wear, possible broken parts using that later rear hub.

Right, I’m not using the hub or suggesting that others do!

Nothing to add apart from that looks great so far. I had an 05 and while it was the slowest thing I've ever rode it made you feel like James Stewart. Funnest bike I ever had and seriously regret selling it.

Hell ya, I even have the Stewart bend handlebars on there Smile
