1982 I did a highside at the old Lakewood track in CO and took a grade 3 separation. At the time the ortho, really good ortho, said we can operate or we can wear a compression sling for the summer and rehab after. I asked him to describe the surgery, it was pretty invasive and opted for the sling.

The shoulder was fine for years, some ROM issues but overall good. Now, nearly 40 years later it is painful on occasion.

If I had that same injury today I wouldn't think twice about the surgery, shit's vastly improved.

If that is you in your avatar you're carrying a lot of muscle around that shoulder, it will be more difficult to retain that after this injury.

Scam124, the reason I started this topic was to see what others experiences were. I learned long ago that some people have the mentality of "just rub some dirt in it" and others have the mentality of "I need to meet with 19 surgeons, have 3 PT's, and a home nurse for my sprained pinky". That said, on this specific topic I started there has actually been some solid advice, yours included.
Currently I am moving it around as much as I've been told to do. I'm very lucky to have a few friends who are physical therapist's and have a few clients who are in the health care field who have given me things to do to help my situation.
Also, I have an appointment today to talk with an ortho surgeon today.
Thank you for the solid advice, too.
I think when I did mine they didn't even offer me a surgical fix. I got to say it took a good year to heal and there was always a small lump. It might heal quicker if I did physical when I was one of those duct tape guys. I was always a weightlifter and the following year I started working out again and had no problem benching 370 lb by the end of the year. never had another problem with it, till I tore my rotator cuff.

@CR92 Did you get the surgery? I’m on week 9 post surgery and have probably 85% of my range of motion back so far.

No surgery for me. Talked with two surgeons, a few physical therapists, one who is a close friend that did a lot of research for me. All agreed that no surgery was the best route.
Been rehabbing it since with PT 1×~2x a day.
Three weeks since and I have 100% ROM back. Strength is at about 65% through all ROM, except through parts of crossing shoulder adduction. Big shock on that one though, since shoulder adduction puts the most stress on the AC joint.

To everyone on here, I truly believe one of the best things i did with this injury was PT immediately, and switched from a sling to McConnell taping.
The McConnell taping allowed me to keep using my arm "normally" without hurting it and allowing it to heal. I believe this is one of the main reasons I've gotten my ROM back so quickly. It wasn't able to really atrophy.

Third degree separation in 1999. Did it at Hardrock in Ocala on vacation. Rested for a week went home and back to work. Only thing that still gives me problems is low shoulder makes my shirts fit funny. Now it still hurts like the first time if I crash on it but the pain is much shorter duration.

A friend and l used to argue which is worse, shoulder injuries or knee injuries. He destroyed his shoulder skiing and tore my ACL complete in my right knee riding. We argued for years. He finally wrecked his knees and a few years ago l destroyed my shoulder.

There's no more arguing. He was right. Shoulders are fucking a nightmare. I tore my rotator in my right shoulder Jan 2018. Had surgery to repair it and it took over a year to feel close to right and there's still nights l can't sleep lying down.

l had my knees replaced in 2011 and it was a cake walk compared. Good luck and do bust ass in PT it makes all the difference.

Glad it’s healing up well for you.

I was amazed how much better my shoulder felt after one week and that gave me doubts if I should get the surgery. Also, all the research I did online gave me doubts but I just said eff it, I’ll get the surgery and make sure my bones are solid in place.

The problem with this situation is, we can never know if the path we took was the best one. I’m happy with my surgery, but maybe the no surgery route would have been just as good.

There is a cosmetic benefit, which I didn’t really care about, but is nice. My shoulder looks the same as my non-injured shoulder. I had quite a displacement before the surgery.

the Cosmetic part is fixable with weight lifting. The lump on my shoulder was huge after some time back in the gym it was barely noticeable. I don't think that's going to work this time with me though , they took so much bone out of the shoulder is quite a bit shorter than the other one.

Ahhh the old separated shoulder did mine in 99 never had a problem with it other than it sticks up no pain and full ROM.
Doc said surgery would only be cosmetic if I wanted to go that route but said if it don't hurt and works fine leave it alone.
Still riding and have never had an issue with it.

So, here's another question for all of you who have had this injury.
Since injuring, have you; injured your other shoulder with the same injury? Have reinjured the same with the same injury?
I'm very curious about this.
Also, sorry if my grammar is off. One of my current goals during this quarantine is to better my texting/writing grammar. Don't know if it's going well or not. 😅

Hey everyone, sorry to dig this thread up, but for those of you who have had this injury, did you get a concussion at the same time? If yes, or no, let me know, and also could you add what kind of helmet you were wearing?
In this crash I destroyed my helmet pretty good, so I'll be getting a new one and would like some of that info from you all. I know every crash is different. But I would just like to hear your experiences. I'm not asking for your favorite helmet, just what is above.
Also, if someone could tell me, what is the actual difference between these helmets:
6d atr1 & 6d atr2 (one is just the newer version?)
Bell mx9 & bell moto9
Fox v2 & fox v3 (both have the fluid, maybe more air vents?)
Let me know, and sorry for the long posts.

What kind of bell were you wearing? What did you get? What do you have now? I'm probably going to be back on the bike in about a week and a half. Gonna be making my helmet decision here soon.

it was a Jeremy McGrath replica, Bell always offered a high-end replica and a low in mine was the low in lol. I just started riding again do to two back to back shoulder injuries. I've been off the bike for 6 years. I think the helmet I have now is a fly.

I had a grade 5 seperation which required surgery. My ortho went with a Weaver-Dunn procedure. I am mostly asymptomatic and have aqbout 95% range of motion from prior energy.

However I did race Mammoth MX with it seperated prior to surgery. Not fun. But I dislocated it a few weeks prior to mammoth so I decided to still race and get surgery after Mammoth.

Little side note. The crash was actually on a pit bike that I borrowed from Josh Grant. Those little bike will get you.
