Now, here's my person "opinion". I'm a small business owner now but I have worked for large corporations in the past where I gained valuable experience. I started at the bottom and worked my way up to upper/middle management and then left (I can't stand corporate executive management crap). I have been trained in how to manage people professionally - motivation, coaching, personal development, etc. Situational leadership 101 stuff. I think the leadership of that team either needs a face lift or needs to go to some professional coaching clinics on how to best deal with people. The long and short of it is - everybody is motivated/wired differently. You don't treat a seasoned/experienced person the way you treat an inexperienced rookie. The best coaches (or managers) recognize the strengths and weakness of their employees, and caters to their specific needs to help them grow and develop.
Know your people, know the situation, and adapt your leadership based on each situation. Leader, manager, teacher, doer. D1 through D4 players, treat them all differently. The way you treat say a Shane McElrath versus a Derek Drake is very different, same goes for the way someone should treat Brandon.
All that said, I don't know that it is fair to 100% fully blame TK, its not like the MX industry is the epitome of professional development. I am also of the belief that there's still no scenario where being a complete asshole is acceptable either.
I never said he was actually a douche 100% of the time. And I think that is absolutely amazing that he’s been with Brian since his crash. I don’t think most team managers would do that outside of a small handful.
Sometime that meant calling him out, other times encouraging him, while other times, looking outside himself for other opinions to find the best solution for the rider. These are kids, not seasoned riders. The seasoned riders are in the 450 class. You're getting a behind the curtain look at the reality of racing.
Watch it again thru the eyes of a team manager.
