I was looking at getting a Ktm 250/300XC to get into some hard enduro riding. While my kx450 is set up for woods it’s by no means a worthy hard enduro bike but I was hesitant dropping that much money. A few weeks ago this 05 Kx250 dropped into my lap. I decided to forgo the ktm and do a frame up build on the kx

I bought it for $1300 which I think was a good deal. The bike is pretty clean for its age. Starts first kick but was bogging pretty bad. The guy I got it from didn’t have the time to tear it apart. I got it home, power washed, drained the old gas out and gave the carb a quick blow out with carb clear. Fired it back up and it reved out perfectly. Score! I have yet to take the head off to inspect the top end but with the way it was running and the fact that I am going to replace everything I’m not to worried about it.

Not sure how big the off-road/enduro community is on here but what are some must haves for this type of bike? What are some good to haves? Going to start buying parts and wait until I have everything to start tearing the bike apart.

Bike looks great for its age, still has the stock pipe and original seat cover. There's no shortage of power...I suggest starting with a flywheel weight. Yup, nice score you got.

$1300 you basically stole it. I'd grab a skid plate.

probably going to need some engine work to make it have a more friendly power delivery then stock.

I plan on doing a fly wheel weight and rekluse. I have a rekluse on my other bike but have never used a fly wheel weight. Hopefully that tames it down a bit.

I took the bike out yesterday for a little bit and the power is insane. It is a blast in the open trails but not well suited for technical tight single track. I am thinking about getting a magura hydraulic clutch as well. The clutch pull on this is tiring after a while. Even after lubing it up real good. I am going to see if the rekluse solves before I get the hydraulic but even with a rekluse I still need to use the clutch for obstacles.

This is going to get expensive haha.

I remember the last gen KX250's sometimes needed the air gap between the flywheel and pickup to be set properly. Don't recall the specifics, but a search should get you going.

Yep! Set it on the high end of the spec called out in the manual.

Rekluse will make clutch pull more difficult, but it's saving grace is that you will use significantly less
Edit: ops you already knew that since you already have one.

Actually I have had a different experience with my Rekluse. The clutch pull was unchanged on my 450. I did get the top of the line CX model with the new friction plates to eliminate this very issue. I plan on doing the same with the 250 but they only make the Radius X for the 2005 not the CX. They both have the same friction plates so I'm hoping I will get the same results.

Does anyone have experience with the Radius X?

a fmf gnarly and the power valve mod would help move the power into a lower rpm ranges as well.

I built an ‘01 KX250 for Colorado single track/off-road.
Gnarly pipe for sure but I really liked the PC platinum.
FWW for sure.
I could never got my lectron carb to work great for me but others have on the KX.
One of the better mods is the KDX 250 transmission, it’s a wide ratio transmission and really helps off road.
There is a very very talented rider from Canada that goes by the forum name small_and_fast, he races a 2005 KX250 in pro class for hard enduro. I would find him on IG or thumpertalk. His IG is malcolm_hett
