Anyone know the names of the guys on that team? There was a Darrell something or other that got injured sometime around 1980 during an SX race that ended his career. Anyone know what his full name was?

No, not Schultz. This Darrell got injured on one of those sections they'd run up the seats, out the stadium, then back down again. I'm not positive it was 1980. Something in the range between 1978 and 1981.

Marty Tripes was on the 1980 Yamaha team also.

Donny Cantaloupi was on it too.

Alright, what number was he? Isn't the no. 19 inch that pic Burnsworth's bike? Who was no. 32 in 1981? I've seen a couple of old pics of 1981 OW125's and OW250's with a no. 32 on them.

Pretty sure the 19 was ridden by Savitski...Also think that is Bevo leaning on the seat...before he put on a few extra pounds. He used to wrench for him. Longshot on the Kaw rider he is talking to...might be Tom Benolkin?

if anyone can fill us in, benolkin can. he's a regular on the other board, but he would be a good fit here too.

schultz was injured in 81 or 82, he was team suzuki

rich coon had just joined team honda in 81 but was injured, i dont think he ever raced for them.

the only one i can remember getting injured at the colisium around that time was lance morewood (sp?). i dont think it was career ending. not sure who he rode for but wasnt he a mxa test rider?

Okay kids, Benolkin says..............

Hi Joe,

TB been super busy...which is nice!

Savitski is talking to short term team Kawasaki rider Larry Wosick...looks like the LA Coliseum to me.

Someone has the D-A sound of Darrel stuck in their head but who they are really thinking of was a very fast Oklahoman, Team Moto-Fox racer named John Day. His racing career peaked at top privateer in the 500cc class of 1980. It came to an end the at Red Bud.

If you ever saw the HUGE 1st turn crash at the Red Bud Trans-Am where I am about to hit the ground and break my wrist....that is the crash which left John Day with a severe concussion. Pissed me off too as I had the holeshot and total daylight ahead of me.

He was advised to never race again by his physician. His father was an ultra wealthy business owner and to the best of my knowledge he took a position with one of the companies he owned.

Most of this information was given to me through his mechanic and Fox employee Jimmy Vester during this era.

PEACE brother Joe!
TB

Nope, wasn't the guy Benolkin talked about. Thing is, there's an individual who works at a store which I frequent, and he claims to be this person. I've asked his last name, but unfortunately I forgot it. He cited a few instances that makes him seem sincere, but I wasn't sure, so I thought I'd ask here. I'll ask him his last name again, and let's see where this goes.

Thanks for trying to figure this one out. I'll post his name once I find out (again).

Here's a pic of John Day leading Dallas' Kirk Spencer circa 1980.
