Check crank seal behind flywheel. Probably sucking air,and going lean.

Don’t ride it until you fix it, could be doing serious engine damage.

Need to order a seal (buy OEM from dealer), a flywheel removal tool, and have someone who is a pretty decent mechanic replace it. It’s not hard, but you need to be very careful not to get debris into the crankcase, and the seal needs to be driven in correctly. You can probably find a few videos on YouTube, but there’s some bad “how to” videos there too.

Check rubber intake boot for cracking, and bad gasket jobs on intake too. Definitely sounds like it’s sucking air in somewhere.

For sure a lean issue... I have a 81 rm and my did the same thing.. my air leak was by the reeds so I used a lil yamalube gasket and boom done.. also I fattened the carb settings.. I did all this at the same time so I’m not really sure which fixed the problem but it is fixed soo. Good luck

Ps start it a spray some carb cleaner around gaskets and if it runs then you know where the leak is at...
