2017 CRF450 Backfire

Hi Guys,

Recently my bike started backfiring a bit when you twist the throttle slightly on idle.

It never did this before , any reason why it would start now ?

Bike is completely stock, no mapping changes done, about 80 hours on the motor and use normal 95 gas here in South Africa. No motor work was done as of yet.

Just to add :


The only change the last 2 months is that I'm using Bel Ray oil instead of Motul. Would that make any difference ?

Clean air filter?

Check the header and muffler for exhaust leak?

Oil shouldn't have an effect.

Clean the fuel injector. Check the TPS setting.

Filter is cleaned after every ride, in fact, it has a brand new Twin Air in it.

Didn't check for any exhaust leaks as of yet , ill take a look tonight .

This sucks. Did you figure it out? And Honda throttle bodies are unique from other brands as their TPS is already set and marked with white paint from the factory because they don't want you messing with it. You can't buy it separately either. So the only way that would be affecting things is if you messed with it previously. Is the bike hard to start?

Probably 2-3 months ago I took out the throttle body and thoroughly cleaned it with contact cleaner. Bike isnt really hard to start except if its warm , then usually it takes 2-4 kicks to get going (Still have the kickstarter on mine)

I'm moving into a new place in a few days so wont be tearing into the bike as i don't want any parts laying around when i move..

But will keep you posted on what I find , thanks !

Are your valves within spec? Ever checked them?

My issue was..... Stupid.... Header bolts worked loose... Whoops
