While we all hate to see the news run with an item like this if only for ratings. Isnt reporting this sort of thing "exactly" what the news should be for?

I got a pre-recorded call from my kids' school about the flu.

I hung up.

Just found a note by the phone (in my wife's handwriting) with a list of symptoms, and the district nurse's phone number.

I wrote "PANIC" across it in huge letters.

The flu is the flu.

Old people and week babies might die from it, but they might die from any strain of the flu.

My assistants kid is on a cruise right now. They were headed to Mexico and got re-routed to the Florida Keys.

My university sent out an email about it, since the upstate locations have some students from south Jersey, where apparently there were suspected cases.

Good hygiene and common sense are good things to practice all the time, and this situation is not exempt from that.

Perry just shut down all UIL sport meets here in Tejas. A lot of the high school kids (including my niece) got screwed since track Regionals was this weekend. Lot of ticked off kids and parents. Especially one particular senior who runs the 2 mile. He had no competition at district and is a real threat to win state so he put it on cruise control to save himself for regionals. Now they are skipping regionals and just taking the top 4 times to state. He aint going to state now.

There have been two elementary students here in Alabama that possibly have the Swine Flu. They will know for today and the CDC test everything again. As of right now, all the schools in that area are closed. Also, they have cancelled all sporting events until at least next week,

from what I've found, it seems that it's pretty contagious, but not particularly bad as far as the flu goes.

Many people die every year due to the flu. Most get the sh1ts, hack and cough for a few days and then go back to work/school.

This country is getting crazy with fright. First we have a low flying plane causing people to lose their mind and jump out of windows. Now we have this mild flu that we're closing schools over and a single American has yet to die from it. Why all of a sudden the mass hysteria?

http://www.cdc.gov/od/oc/media/pressrel/r030107.htm

Using new and improved statistical models, CDC scientists estimate that an average of 36,000 people (up from 20,000 in previous estimates) die from influenza-related complications each year in the United States. In addition, about 11,000 people die per year from respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), a virus that causes upper and lower respiratory tract infections primarily in young children and older adults. The study demonstrates that most deaths caused by RSV occur in the elderly.

Just read this too from something called Global Security.com.

During a typical year in the United States, 30,000 to 50,000 persons die as a result of influenza viral infection. Frequently cited numbers are 20,000 deaths each year, and 37,000 annual deaths. About 5-10% of hospitalizations for influenza lead to fatal outcome in adults.
