Anyone see the new Gibson line? Some of these guitars are making me want another Gibson. The SG's with the vibrato are art pieces.

I don't even know how to play guitar and I want one lol. I've always wanted to learn how to play but I just don't know if I have the patience to learn and not get frustrated to the point of saying fuck it and smash it to pieces.

I like this one.

For you guys that play, did you take lessons or learned on your own? Did you learn on an acoustic or electric?

A friend that passed away a couple years ago said that if I ever decided to pick it up that I should start on an acoustic guitar. No idea why.

Your friend had it right. Learn on acoustic. That way you will hopefully start out learning the chords instead of shredding. Once you do, all kinds of shit starts making sense with the music you like. I have a friend who will never be a good guitar player but he loves it anyway. He showed up one day playing the intro to Wish You Were Here. Sounded great.

The only SG I ever played didn't need a vibrato. Neck was a little wobbly (built in vibrato) which I think is one of the things they're noted for. Something you get used to as obviously there are many out there in the hands of pros.

Lots of quality issues with them lately. The Epiphones are actually nicer at this point. Did they ever finally file bankruptcy? I know they pretty much let most of their artists go a while back. Sucks to see such an iconic brand struggle, so much history and great looking axes.

Last I heard they are no longer in bankruptcy. New CEO and management. (Needed) I will have to go to GC in a week or so and check out the new line.
The best made guitars are made by small shops that still have master craftsmen working and patrolling the shop. Gibson, Fender have computers patrolling the shop. There is no voodoo or magic involved in electric guitar building. Everybody can get quality wood, frets, pickups, bridges, tuners ect. Famous guitar players that play Gibson and Fender are not playing the same guitar you can buy off the shelf.

I started taking lessons on electric. Learned most everything on electric actually. Learning chords first helps a player keep interest IMO because you can learn the basics of any song you want to play. It takes patience, but with all the lessons you can take for free on youtube, its not hard to learn anymore.

If you're ever interested in learning, I'd be happy to set you up with some beneficial free videos that will help. If you enjoy rock, i'd recommend learning on an electric. Its more fun that way if you ask me.

I'll say this, I taught myself to play about 4-5 years ago. I've got a nice sunburst Ibanez rgx, but for the most part I've been playing my Yamaha Pacifica. You can score the things for 100 bucks on ebay and they play phenomenally well. I would recommend one to any beginner or amateur guitarist. Those new gibsons look totally sick though... might have to start saving up. Nice LTD or Chapmann would be cool too...

I don’t know how well my suggestion would be a accepted by purists but you should check out Rocksmith. It’s a computer based learning tool that usually gets labeled as a game but its far from that I feel. It uses tracks from a large body of artists and presents you a scolling 3d representation of a tab for the songs notes and playing technique (slides, bends, etc.). It has the tones built in you just plug in your guitar and it presents the notes on the note highway and captures your playing and scores you. Several songs are included but there is a sizable volume of DLC available for purchase too.

If you ever have played or saw Rockband or Guitar Hero it reminds you of those games. When my kids were younger they had Rockband. I never played it but thought the way in which it presented the notes was interesting and i thought at the time someone should do something like it for use with a real guitar. Well in 2012 they did with Rocksmith and I bought it to use on an Xbox 360. I never played guiter before but in my 50’s I took it up. You don’t need an amp but I split my Xbox audio output off and fed it into my old home stereo system so I had a better sound than I could get from just my TV or computer speakers.

Rocksmith gets you up and playing quickly and has many different ways to use it and can emphasize chords or singlenote playing. It can be used with acoustics if they are outfitted with pickups and also works with bass guitars You are playing over the top of recorded songs so I feel its important to reduce the volume of the backing track so you hear your guitar more prominently. Its the connection betwen your ear and hand that you develop. I’m not saying its a substitute for taking lessons from an instructor but it is fun and can stimulate you to play often. When your first starting out it may help you realize if you have the motivation/dedication to learn to play.

I don’t aspire to join a band or perform for others its just a way for me to enjoy music in another manner and keep my brain engaged. It’s really kind of a trip to “observe” how your brain learns to perform the tasks. It seems you can intently practice a song and then put it away for weeks and come back to it and play it better than ever. Your brain is just putting the pieces together in the background it seems.

Did the Gibson factory tour a couple years ago. Was pretty cool and smelled amazing, like a cross between woodshop and a new surfboard, heaven.. lol.

Hey Maverick. Check out the above comment from OldYZRider1. I actually think you would really dig rocksmith. I've never tried it myself, but if you're thinking about learning guitar, picking up a squire strat & rocksmith might be a really fun way of doing it.
