Titles against Max Nagl his teammate and Privateer Honda pilot Desalle in 2009, in 2010 again against Clément Desalle who became second but missed one GP, the next year he kept himself before Steven Frossard (2011) who was out for two GP's and Clément Desalle who finished third missed three GP's. To be honest I think that winning against Smets, Bervoets, Vohland, Pichon, Demaria, Strijbos, Tortelli, Bolley, Beirer, McFarlane, Shane King, Coppins, Townley,... is more impressive then beating Desalle over and over again because he was to stubborn to learn how to become a sand rider and to beat Frossard, Van Horebeek, ...

Stefan also won the ISDE and carried Belgium towards MXON wins. Besides those results he also won a few Grand Prix Supercross races back in 1992. A broken leg prevented him from becoming WC Supercross. Just imagine.
Now that you point it out, perhaps my perception of the depth of the GP’s for the bulk of Tony’s career are tainted by the depth the past few years, which doesn’t accurately represent the depth Tony raced earlier in his career. (Regarding my point above about Everts having no comp and Tony racing a deep field...may not be entirely accurate.)

You can point to both having major comp that left, especially comp that beat them.

Albee and Tortelli left. Everts would have less titles if they stayed.

Pourcel, Rattray and Townley left. TC would have less there too.

Injuries cost them title runs in the mid part of their career (Stefan on the Husky years and TC lost titles to Febvre and Gasjer that you'd assume he'd have contended for)

BUT IMO, I slightly give the nod to Stefan...because he beat a bunch of champions for titles... Smets, Pichon, Moore, Bolley, Townley, Ramon, Bartolini, King etc

And he also beat another bunch of dudes who seemed to contend more consistently than Tony's rivals. I think Bervoerts, Vohland, Tragjter, Demaria and Beirer – all of whom had their issues – would beat up on the inconsistencies of Dessalle, Paulin, Van Horebeek, De Dycker, Nagl, Phillipaerts etc

Tony's championship level comp were Pourcel (who'd beaten him previously), Chiodi (Not sure if still prime) and Herlings who was injured part the year.

Splitting hairs and they're both amazing, but Stefan had to slay some bigger dragons imo.
Add Jorgensen, Coppins, S Pourcel, young Leok, Ramon, etc, any of them capable of dominating a weekend back then

I'd love to see him win it this year, and then go out on top like so few manage to do. Great rider, great racer and a great bloke as well.

Cairoli gets the nod ahead of Everts for me. Everts was born and raised right in the centre of all things Moto cross due to his father and this made his upward trajectory way easier.
Toni came from nothing and his location and lack of contacts in the sport make his rise to the top more admirable. I remember a Trampus Parker interview when he talked of the time of a family arriving to motos in northern Italy from Sicily in a beat up old van to race and they where so poor all they had to eat was a box of oranges. Toni might eat better now but he’s never lost that hunger and it’s never effected that humanity and dignity thats seems to be ingrained in him. A great human being who just happens to be one the greatest dirt bike riders ever and certainly my favorite hands down.

That's a bit like saying RC "only had James Stewart to beat"

Smets was a beast.

The name Everts was a enorm burden for the up and coming Stefan. Handling with that pressure is something special and he coped with it!

Double the burden for the third generation Everts represented by Liam. Great style though, could turn into something good in 3-5 years(14yo now and I think he is a late bloomer)

I would argue that RC and JS were on a more level playing field in terms of equipment.
I'm confident in saying that while Smets' bike looked trick in 01', the Yamaha was a significantly more effective weapon.

MXMattii: Yes, MXdesN and ISDE are commendable accomplishments for Stefan but I remind you that the title of this thread refers to MX World Championships specifically and that is what I was commenting on.

____________

For me the bottom line is that Everts comes across as pompous and I think some "humble-pie" would serve him well.

Not even close, Smets was great but avoiding Everts was the best thing for his Legacy. Had Smets raced the 250 class IMO he would have 0 titles maybe he beats Bolley, maybe. The best thing the Nationals and GPs did was get rid of the 500 class that was splitting up the best racers.

Your post makes me love the 222 even more. Dude is 33yo and rides a 450 like its a 250 just pinnning, scrubbing and flowing gnarly GP tracks.. I can not believe he's 33.. THIRTY THREE YEARS OLD!!! I wish he would do a season in the US.

To be honest I think that is why he was so good when fighting for the junior world championship in Australia.

Because of his great style? Yeah, one dnf from success. He wasn’t beating those guys in Europe so nothing wrong with his nerves.

I feel when watching Insta and stuff that Stefan/his coaches has put style before speed at this stage of his career. He has a great foundation if he can gain some rawspeed(and weight and height) the latter will come obviously. I have a feeling he will be a great starter too, and manage the motos from the front not riding faster than he has to. He will win a lot with an efficient style.

Everything is guesses at this stage though, and no answers this weekend since the dutch race is cancelled. Anyway is wish all the best for the youngest Everts(and his fathers rehabilitation)

I feel like that is vastly undercutting how good Smets was.

He gave Everts everything he could handle often and had some MXdN performances that qualified his speed IMO.

And he'd have done that to all of Tony's comp without question. Wasn't like he wasn't fast, he had days where he made Everts, Emig etc look slow.

He also had days where he was way off, if your talking MxDN he was over 3 seconds a lap slower in the sand than RC in 03 in his backyard. When did he beat Emig? 97? When everyone did? Otherwise Emig was first or second in his class and the one time he raced the permire class in 95 he was slowing down on purpose with Smets behind him I think on his trusty 800. Smets was great no denying that. But he was not Everts... not even close. And you vastly underestimate DeSalle. It’s hard to make it through a season pushing the whole time because your racing AC and you know you have to push it to your limits. I agree with Paulin and others not being on the same level as Smets. Although Nagl in the beginning of 15 was on a level few have reached. But give DeSalle a class without AC just like Smets had for years to rack up wins/titles without Everts and DeSalle is multi time champ.

Wasn’t Emig saying the other day he was multiple seconds a lap slower than Smets in 95 MXdN? Or maybe it was Ryno, can’t remeber.

Not underestimating Desalle. I think it’s easier to beat a guy for a title that might go faster than you occasionally but you almost know won’t be there for the whole year, especially when you’re the champ and he hasn’t proved he can finish a year, let alone contend.

Smets also beat champs for his titles and Bervoerts, who would have given most of Tony’s comp hell every dam day.

The only rider faster than Emig that day was Beirer but he crashed while leading the last moto. Emig inherited the lead and had a decent gap on Everyone else . Under team orders he slowed down to try to bunch them up lol. It all became irrelevant when Nicoll crashed with Hughes on his rear wheel taking him out.
In 97 Emig was off the pace which is strange considering the year he had. Apparently he said he did nothing but party in the weeks leading up to that MXdN and was not on form.

They are both one of the bests ever. I just think i liked it better when the best gp riders stayed, as in the 500cc class in the 80s. Malherbe vs. Thorpe vs. Jobe vs. Geboers or Malherbe vs Carla vs. Lackey vs Noyce imo meant more. Yes they all have less titles then Evers and TC.

Everts vs. Tortelli vs. Pichon vs. Albertyn for a decade would have been awesome.
Same with musquin, Roczen and Herlings in this era.

That was Ryno, he said he was feeling really good on the 500 & was shocked how much slower he was than Smets. Come race day he was up to speed.

Someone needs to break down the US all time win list and split some hairs. Back when Hannah was racing there weren’t nearly as many races available to him to win. How close to the top would he rank had he had as many chances as RC, MC and Stewart? There would probably be a few old timers up near the top of it was percentage based.

Hannah won 18 races in his 3 champinship years and Weedge famously said on pulp that Hannah didn’t really win much. Well being those 3 years there was only 33 Races which dosent cover 2 years today.. 34 races in 2. So yeah his win percentage was high. RJ was screwed the most, in 88 he won 7 SX races there was only 10 that season. Plus 250 and 500 being split up affected MX hugely.

The GP's were crap during Everts reign...most all of Everts serious competition (Tortelli, Albertine, Vuilliman, Reed, Pichon, etc. etc. etc. etc.) spent some/most of their careers racing in america (where they subsequently got smoked by RC-like everyone else). Leave all of that competition in the GP's and Everts has several less titles and many many many less wins. Because of that I think Tony is a far superior rider to Everts, right now (and I really like Everts, and his style, he's a bad dude on a dirt bike, so I don't mean any disrespect to him), but only a crazy biased person would say Everts was a better rider than Tony is.

A lot of guys certainly left during Everts' reign, but don't forget that in the last 15 years there's been several MX2 World Champions who left for America before really moving up to MXGP, namely Ben Townley, Christophe Pourcel, Tyla Rattray, Marvin Musquin and Ken Roczen.

Also, while Everts had a year where he could get two and even three wins in a single day, he was mostly limited to12 GPs in most of his other seasons, so Cairoli has had as many chances in his 15 years and counting as Stefan had in is 17 seasons.

All that said, Cairoli has been a much more consistent and healthy champion, and his evolution as a world-class sand rider has been remarkable, considering where he was when he began. I think it's safe to say that there would be an even debate for either Stefan or Antonio (once he catches his tenth) but together they are far and away the two best MXGP riders of all time. I personally feel very fortunate to have been able to watch both, just as I was when I got to see Jeremy dominate SX in the nineties and Ricky dominate in the '00s.

Enjoy both for their greatness!

Better than Joel Robert DC? All things considered I would put Robert the best of them all for GP's only.

DeCoster once said that Joel used that as a psych game and that many of his drinks ended up in the flower pot...haha.

Watching old videos it is amazing how fast those guys went on those bikes . And it was an era where they had to know how to "preserve" the machine also.
