My advice, study up on what type of roof and siding they have, where seams are and any components that penetrate or are bolted to the outside. How do the ramp doors attach and seal? They will soak up water at the hinge mounts and rot in short order. I'm even hesitant to buy a new one around here because of how long they have been sitting on the lot in the rain.
I have a 2013 KZ MXT 302 its my 2nd toy hauler and Ive had it almost 3 years. Never had a problem with it. Bought used from the original owner after he had it a year. I had it for sale for a while but I believe we are just going to keep it unless someone just wants it.
It 32' long and we pull it empty with the wifes Ecodiesel Jeep Grand Cherokee. When loaded down I pull it with my 2500 dodge. But even loaded its under 8000 lbs Im pretty sure.

I had a 1500 Silverado (2013 with the 5.3) that was rated for 9k or whatever. I got so sick of my pop up after a super rainy unadilla weekend, that I said enough of this i'm getting a toy hauler.
I wanted a separate garage. Otherwise it was like a box trailer with a kitchen and bathroom. Very hard to find that in a rear garage toy hauler unless your 30 + feet.
I was looking for the 2007-2009 Keystone 230 front garage toy hauler, but found everybody wanted 11-15k for them, and they were like MSRP 22 New so I knew they were purchased new in the 14-15 range.
Ended up getting a smoking deal (7K) for a SUPER clean 280 front garage toy hauler, same layout except this has a side slide as well. GVWR was 8600 loaded up.
After pulling it twice with my half ton with the proper load distribution hitch, I traded the truck in on a 2500 diesel.
I know all the OEM's publish these ridiculous tow ratings on half tons , and ford is probably the worst for this.
Crew cab 1500 truck, say 5200LB curb weight, then add a tank of fuel. Now add atleast 10% tongue weight on 8k (800 pounds). your 6k pounds + a tank of fuel before passengers. GVWR of the truck was like 7k.... Doesnt leave much room for you and your wife to ride along legally in it. GCWR was like 14000? Pounds, now you have your 8k trailer, with your 5500 pound truck (tongue weight isnt accounted for in this), plus passengers in your truck, you're over 14k pounds.
After struggling to make it up hills at even 60 on the highway with my camper , and watching the thing live at 4500 RPM on the highway to do it, I was all set on trying to do it with a half ton even though it was technically under the tow rating. Campers are MASSIVE windsails at 8+ foot wide and 11 feet tall. Anyone telling you they pull 8-9k pounds in a half ton pickup and that the truck does it well is out to lunch. Sure you can overload it and it WILL pull it, it wont do it well at all, your trans temps will be super hot, and god forbid something happened and there was an accident and you're over weight, your might as well kiss everything you own goodbye.
Just my 2 cents from somebody who went down this road. I had grand plans to use it pretty often, spending saturday nights at the track ect. In reality, I only use it when a track is having a saturday practice, race sunday. It just isnt worth the time/effort to drag the camper less than say 1.5 hours to a track just to open it up, spend one night, spend a lot of sunday closing it up throughout the day, to then drag it home and have to deal with dumping the crapper, than just getting up and driving 1.5 hours sunday morning to the race.
OP, you want my advice? Go find a trailer with a dry weight of about 1/2 of your trucks advertised capacity. And pay close attention to the tongue weight and factor it into the max payload of your truck. Don't be that guy on the highway endangering those around you.
My Ecoboost F-150 is rated to tow about 11,000 but has a payload of only 1200. If you do the math backwards, after me, my dog, my tonnue cover, my bed rug, my WD hitch, my spare change in the console (you get the idea) and whatever else I put in the truck, I'm left with about 550 pounds of payload reserved for the tongue weight. That equates to about a 5000-5500 pound trailer, max, before I'm over my limits regardless of what my window sticker claims I can pull. My trailer weighs about 4500 and I can comfortably pull it anywhere.
Pit Row
6k pushes it around enough that the stability control light is flashing quite often.
I had a 20' front bath model with the kitchen to the side. There was enough room I cold get my wife's quad in, and then I could easily get 3-4 MX bikes in it. I probably could have gotten a golf cart + ATV + one MX bike without too much hassle.
The trailer was about 6500 pounds dry; steel frame. 80 gallons of water weighed 680, and then I had maybe another 1,000 pounds of cargo in it for a total of 8,180 lbs., well below the 10K limit for my Tundra. The trick is that your tow capacity and vehicle cargo are cumulative, so make sure you don't go over the GVWR when you add all trailer weight + occupants and cargo in the truck!
Lots of folks on here have some good ideas about camping in the vehicle, and certainly having a garage would be epic, but I was resigned to leaving the bikes outside (locked up, of course). I never noticed the smell of gas once everything went outside. Plus, it's camping. You aren't supposed to feel like you are at home.
Like someone else mentioned, 40 replies and 40 different opinions.
I have a 27' travel trailer thats about 8900 fully loaded up, top quality E-qual-izer WDH/Anti-sway hitch, bike packed in the bed of my truck, firewood, generator, wife and dog, etc. My 1/2 ton Tundra pulls and stops it just fine.
To each his own. Good luck on the Trailer search OP!
I’m going to check out the RV show next week and see what happens from there. Your daughters camper sounds like a great deal but I’m concerned it’s going to be too much money for me. I have a hard $25k limit.
