I’m 23 and started riding on a xr50 when I was 6. My dad rode when he was a teen in the 80’s and wanted to get back into it so he bought me and my little brother that bike so my mom would let him get a bike to ride with us. She rode snowmobiles when she was young but was afraid of dirtbikes, but eventually started riding bikes herself. The closest place to ride (other then our figure 8 track in the back yard) was over an hour away.

Our local bike dealer told my dad about the CCC of Michigan and told us to check it out. I think the first organized ride we went to was in 2002 and living in Ohio that meant about a 5 hour drive. We were hooked on single track and would usually go to 3 rides a year. Dad got one of his high school friends and his kids into riding and they would go with us.

Before the crash in 08 you could expect 700 riders in a weekend and I think we broke over 1000 riders a few times. That was pry to much for the trails but people where riding. When Detroit fell people going to the rides droped off drastically. We stopped going around 2012. My brother and I started going again a few years ago. now Maybe 70 people show up and on a “big” ride 130ish.

Most of my friends have no interst in riding even just on trails, and the ones who are (that dont already ride) are to afraid of getting hurt or not keeping up to try.. I’ve gotten 2 of them to try and both are still riding. Both started out on $1300 125 smokers.

Like the previous post most people my age think Im crazy for riding bikes, or that they would instantly hurt themselves if they even thought about trying to ride bikes. even tho they wouldnt think twice about 4 wheeling.

I think there some big misconceptions about bikes along with it being expensive to start vs just going to bars or thumbing through things on your phone or netflix.
