AMA´s boys know nothing, someone from Belgium knows better.
Now we have the MXGP scenario. They are faster given the conditions, OK. But coming seasons will be so interesting to watch as paint drying. Factories are not interested. Just KTM making the investment. TM will be gone next year. Too expensive for Suzuki, and we will assume Yamaha because factory means France factory. Grids are half full or empty. In 450 we know who is going to win and in 250 the same. Honda and Kawa will be very happy to hit the third spot. Which should go to HV. Then we have Gaijser making Youtube videos on how to scrub.
Only interes is to watch Prado getting older and hoping that in 3 years is ready to stop the bullet.
The only race worth watching will be Assen if americans decide to go.

Just wondering where all these comments about "half full gates" come from (yes I know the fly away rounds are lower but they have nearly full gates nearly every round).

The USA riders had a bad week, they did not forget how to race MX, holy shit get over yourselves already.

The MXON didn’t prove shit about either racing division. The supposed (self proclaimed) FMOTP got beat by one of his own and the US lost from poor results. In case you didn’t know it’s called racing for a reason and anything can happen. See examples in second sentence.

USA will try again next year as I am sure your country will as well...

We don’t have to try and “fix” everything when we don’t get the results we want.
So you think Coldenhoff is better than Herlings because he beat him in one Moto out of literally the entire year? Your logic is very.... Interesting.

It's funny how people are so quick to knock a guy like Herlings. He's done nothing but prove he's the best current MX rider. He even came here one random race and won last year in his rookie 450 career on a borrowed bike. I don't see Eli or any other top guys here crossing the pond to do a random race, do you? Literally 2 of the 3 top MX guys in the 450 AMA series also comes from the GPs. Let that sink in. Give it another year when Ferrandis jumps up to 450s and he's a top dog too. It really is laughable how much some people deny facts.

Most of the big amateur races DC was talking about that comprise the "amateur MX season" have been around longer than he has had control of the AMA MX series. I'm sure he doesn't want to step on too many more toes by creating this amateur national championship and taking away from those races and venues.

I gotta disagree on the 125 series though. I think running a full series of them would be better than exhibition races even if it means some of the old guys don't come out for it. This could be split into a East/West divisions.

OP, can you please fix the title of the thread, it's giving me a headache

You can easily check the numbers yourself. Mxg.com results.
You take away the locals, free cards, or how you call it and you will understand why people say grids are half empty.

Take the away the privateers and local riders away from the nationals and you'll be left with same half full gates, it's the same both sides of the pond.

We are not talking about that. For instance in Italy the second MXGP moto grid was of 29 riders with locals included. A privateer is not a local joining a race. A privateer is part of the championship.

Not sure what direction AMA should go. They should know better. But thinking that GP's is the model when the series is dying may not be a good idea. And that EMX structure is maintained by families' money. Good to have 2 day races, different series, etc. But someone has to pay.
And if you are right and in America is the same (no idea honestly), I understand teams have enough to support one day racing.

I think the difference between the amateur races attached to MXGP in Europe and what we have here are kind of lost in translation. We already have a de facto "amateur championship" tour with the big amateur gatherings that usually get all of the best riders in the country: the JS7 Spring National at Freestone, the Oak Hill race, Mill Creek in Alabama, the Ricky Carmichael SX at Daytona, Mammoth Mountain, Loretta Lynn's, the Baja Brawl, the reborn Ponca City race that Harold Martin is doing, the Maine Event, KROC, Monster Cup, the Mini O's and more... And we also have "amateur day" races at most nationals, we just haven't strung a series together. They race on Fridays or Sundays at every round except Thunder Valley and Southwick.

If we were to turn the outdoor national weekends into a "USMX" amateur series, I believe it would hurt amateur racing in America even more--especially with Supercross now working in that space during winter months with their new SX Futures program, which should be compelling and popular races. I don't think there are races like LL or the Mini O's or the Monster Cup in Europe, but someone on here might know?

What I believe would immediately help is, for starters, to have longer motos at these amateur events for A classes, just like we do at Loretta's -- and that includes our own regionals and qualifiers. We also should maybe look into a minimum mandatory number of races that one must attend before entering the LL program or SX Futures in order to get some of these kids racing more and not just riding at training facilities. I get why kids do this--it's the MX equivalent of red-shirting, or dropping down a grade--but it's something I wish we could fix because it's hurting local tracks, local races, local districts and local dealerships...

As for MXMatti's suggestion on the 125 class, here is the conundrum (besides not enough time in the day for a real third class): When it gets super-serious, which it will in a hurry, is that the end of the fun and participation for Ryan Villopoto and Ryan Sipes and Darryn Durham and Will Hahn, who come out of retirement for fun? And how will that affect some of the other big amateur races (and tracks) that count on that big turnout?

There's your utopia, MXMatti... Sloane wants new cat sweaters for Ace and Lannister. She's eleven.

And what about the idea that you make all those big amateur nationals into a championship. A bit like the former WMX championship.

Then you have meeting winners but at the end you also have a champion. Who has been the most consistent.

MX Matti, I don't think we need a championship series -- not everyone can afford to travel all across the country as an amateur. But the factory support teams all follow the results closely enough to know who to invest in as a future pro.

I love that idea of splitting a west/east 125 series for the nationals and have it televised. If i were a betting man the racing from the series would be a lot better to watch and closer than any of the 250/450 class. We can only dream but would love to see it become a reality

Is live TV growing the sport in the US? Is it bringing new people to moto or catering to those that already have MX bikes in the garage? It seems like a major constraint to the format of both race day format and series schedule. Would a delayed broadcast bring in any less advertising dollars?

Matthes seemed to reason that the gap between nationals and the MXON, which more than a few others on here cited, as just one of the reasons how the US lads struggle with being at peak focus with regards to MX. Ditch the live TV deal, MX sports bring in a their own online live TV package in the same vein as MXGPTV and they have control over their schedule again; sell rights to broadcast delayed coverage if terrestrial TV is that important? Implement a lay off between SX and the start of the Nationals to allow the Nationals to finish on the same weekend as the GPs.

Yes to East / West tiered 2 stroke championship, not to cater to retirees but give a cheaper participation cost to genuine privateers and provide the manufacturers still developing 2 strokes a platform to advertise their product.

It doesn’t fix the SX schedule, maybe FELD would just stretch out the SX series even more if nationals started later? Who knows....

Maybe it’s destined for separate teams for SX and MX? Definitely seems like SX is the tail wagging the dog. When you’ve got guys like Weston Peick responding to ‘grams saying SX is “a million times better than MX”, that’s sad as fuck to me.

Well as for the live tv comment I can’t say much because I have no idea about but the idea of following the mxgp model is a huge plus in my book. The mxgp streams are flawless and easy to follow with the times of each race all laid out and best of all you can come back and watch later. I hear that the supercross package sucks, if they have a carbon copy of the mxgp interface/quality I would be all over it. From what I’ve heard NBC is catering well for that side of things. But don’t use as I’m from Australia and record the nationals via payTV
