Will motorcycles ever get tension/compression wheel systems like new bicycles? Would these not allow more power to be put directly to the ground plus offer a much stiffer wheel assembly while being lighter? Would they not help in sterring and tracking???

Saw these at the Tour Of Cali a couple weeks ago and they are amazing. Carbon spokes and wheels, stiffer and lighter, than their AL counterparts. The spokes are actually flat on some of the new wheels (not shown). I have heard that test have shown a 30% increase in stiffness while reducing overall weight.

Anyone know if any of the major wheel/spoke companies have ever tested anything like these for MX????

I am no expert but my guess is that they wouldn't hold up in moto.

You will see wheel using a similar idea. Not a carbon spoke, but fiberglass strands. Look for it in the near future. It is already being tested and is out there.

As for the mavic rsys above. It is a good wheel. But, not the stiffest or lightest out there. It has a very different ride to it. Very stiff, but yet very supple at the same time. Its a good wheel and a good idea, but not the wave of the future, just another wheel out there.

Travis P was at my house a few days ago and you should have seen the carbon fiber spokes he is running. youm can take the spoke and make a pretzel out of it. The Guy from Cali. flew in to inspect them and showed me the inside of one. looks like strands of cardboard. So strange. they are bright yellow and are supper strong. I think he's gonna run them in St. Loui

The carbon stuff is strong and light weight, but cannot handle impact. It's not that it cant handle flex, or pressure, but sudden impact on it results in unsatisfactory results.

Thanks guys... was wondering since road bikes dont jump and the reports I read said they were pretty sweet on bicycles. I heard there was a recall of the Mavic. I run Mavic wheels, on a Specialized Epic Carbon, and was thinking of changing. I was looking at my kids YZ85 and since it was time to do the spokes again, the thought crossed my mind.... thanks for the input.

Too stiff and too expensive. In addition, the performance gains would be minimal. In road bikes, because the bike is so light and directly powered by your pedaling, that weight gains under a pound are noticeable. On a motocross bike, this just isn't true. I have a feeling we'll be sticking to alloy wheels for the near future....

Ya but for the cost and lack of durability that carbon wheels will have in an mx setting, it will almost certainly not be worth it.
