why is it that i like Dave Despain's one on one stuff, but really struggle with his SX stuff. Was it done live back then or was it talking over footage afterwards, cos thats a tough gig.

Done live on circuit stuff, and thats dead easy compared to 'highlights'

philG they rarely did live stuff back in the day. Instead, they would shoot live-to-tape and then edit it down to whatever length of show was needed, then bring in Dave or Larry or Art or David Bailey to do a voice-over at the TV production company, either Seals TV or Chet Burks Productions, both outside of Atlanta. That started to change in the mid-nineties when live TV started becoming more doable. But they would often have hosts go the races to shoot a stand-up intro, if it was convenient or a big network deal like the '79 Daytona SX on CBS, or the ABC Wide World of Sports events at Carlsbad.

The Video's of those races used to cost £25 each back in the day, and they used to take months to get here.

Now we have live TV and pay per view internet, january and february for me is a whole load of all nighters.

Times change..

I liked the motorsports commentators that really gave this sport (and others) some visibility. If I knew nothing about moto or supercross, but if Steve Evans or Gary Gerould was reporting I'd listen just to hear their perspective. Hell, way back in the day anyone watch those buggy races in the swamps? Knew nothing about the sport, but some familiar voices helped to keep my attention and get me into it. Brock Yates, Paul Page, Ralph Shaheen all good.




Forgot about these guys. Paul Page, Steve and Gary used to do Daytona every year on the American Sports Cavalcade. They were awesome, and their broadcast was always done a little better than the ESPN product IMO.

Thinking back to some of my old SX tapes from the 70's, I recall them using people like Richard Roundtree (yes Shaft), John Brodie and a guy named Bo Bock as announcers. SX was on the low end of the totem pole in those days.

Larry Huffman got in some great calls with those RJ and Wardy battles but man, Micky Dymond was bad ass. Love that dude. Dig the "6" font too, which Matthes replicated perfectly on his 88 project build.

1991 was an odd year. Odd station and Larry Maiers and Mercedes Gonzales. I didn't get to see a lot of the broadcasts because they were Sat am from the week prior (or weeks, I forget) and no repeats. Back then VCR recording meant the television had to be on the right channel, or you you recorded the correct time but wrong channel, or if the broadcast got delayed etc...I remember in Atlanta it was on channel 36. I forget the broadcast channel? FOX? If so, it was before FOX Sports so it was just an odd channel for SX to be on.

I have done a few things in the sport of Supercross. From being a young spectator, racing on amateur day, then making it to the night show as a privateer in the 80's. Later working for Parts Unlimited/Thor and hosting hospitality in the pits for dealers. However, one of the coolest things I was fortunate to do was announce the Houston SX in the late 80's with Larry Huffman. He was very graceful and gave me many tips about announcing that I still use today.
