Weisco piston 1 over from stock with a 2 over piston ring, to pump the compression to 15:1.

This one made me laugh.

15:1 comp ratio? No way an air cooled motor would last with that high a comp ratio.

Timebomb.

Impossible for a 2-stroke to have that kind of compression ratio.

Remember that the true compression ratio is measured from the closing of the exhaust port on a 2-stroke, not from the bottom of the crank throw.

I may beg to differ. My 74 CR250 has made quite a few years with no compression related failures. Lots and lots of other failures though!!! I run 116 octane race fuel with Bel-Ray H1R at 50:1. Mild port work, a hundred thousandths off the head , reshaped combustion chamber, custom built pipe, modded 36mm Mikuni with custom billett slide and a PVL Igniton. All port matched cases, intake and exhaust manifolds, carb to air boot to custom airbox. It's sweet, and a money pit. Harder to kick over than my YZ465 and it flat out sings. Wish my olding and ever fattening ass could keep up with it.....

Yes, I know it's not as a four stroke is measured.

newmann using 116 octane his 250 Elsie.....Still think a 490 with that much compression is a bomb even with that high an octane.

The Elsie Mr. Newmann you have had tranny probs like maybe 3rd gear?

I had one I bought in early '90s that was in wonderful cosmetic shape/running condition and sold it to my best friend that raced it and constantly had 3rd gear go out.

Just wondering was that one of your problems. Heard others having similar probs back then.

Tranny problems in an Elsinore? No way!! You should always keep a spare set of shift forks and second and third gearsets in your toolbox for those actually. I built my engine with a complete new gearbox, everything was new, gears ,shafts, forks and drum. Also had a machinist in Atlanta(who happens to be an Elsinore nut) match up all the gears and machine and back cut them for a more even and positive engagement . The gears you speak of were cut onone side and spaced over on the shaft with an additional thrust washer so it would engage deeper. Been about six years now racing it off and on with no gear failures. Used to be a yearly deal.

Glad you haven't had anymore problems.

You were lucky to have a machinist that was an Elsinore nut...! lol.

Good luck.
