XGames FMX- Riders are so good it's boring

So what we are going to do is totally f*** over the X Games, and switch it to ABC for a half hour so we can finish up the Men's Doubles Championship that went on for four hours. THEN, we are also going to put on two anchors talking about the upcoming Women's Singles Championship on ESPN when the X Games are scheduled to play. So put it on ESPN, then switch it to ABC, then nothing. I'm so done with Disney and their crappy coverage of the X Games every single year. Just take it off TV if it's that much of a hassle.

Do we blame foam pits? Don't get me wrong, I think they are great for riders. It's just not the same as when they had only done it a few times. These guys have done it a 100 times by the time they hit dirt. It's great for safety but now they make it look easy. I'm all for foam pits, If I was into freestyle I would have one. I just think from a spectator view it looks so damn easy now and unless you ride you don't appreciate it.

I was there and the first couple of times it was done people cheered pretty loud but after seeing it about 16 times people get, as KBOLTZ stated, de sensitized to it. Practice had only happened a couple hours prior with mostly the same people in the stadium so by the time finals happened everyone had seen the double flip about 16 times as well as every other trick. There is no seperation to the public eye so there is basically no competion which directly translates to no enthusiasim. My 3cents of course.

Anyone happen to know where I can catch a replay of step up? Totally forgot about X-games being on, and missed it.

Personally I think indoor FMX is at a decline and I have no excitement left for it. However I'm incredibly stoked about the new free riding movement with guys like Cue, Parson, and Foster. It's cooler to see it done in natural terrain IMO.

I think all the crazy flips and shit are insane. Much respect to all the guys pulling off those tricks. But all I give a shit about or pay attention to is best whip. No idea why but that's all that interest me. Actually just watching guys like axel on their Instagram accounts is good enough for me. Oh the half pipe shit is so cool to watch also. I can watch it over and over.

FMX had it's time and like it or not it brought a lot of money and new sponsors to MX in general. It's jumped the shark at this point and most pro riders are willing to admit that. Without any major advances in technology that would make tricks like tailwhips and things of that nature a possibility it will continue to fade. I know they've tried a few things with minimal success.

It's been boring since 2001. Even the quarter pipe will be boring to watch by next year. Then they'll make it a half pipe. Then the smart guys will use trials bikes. Laughing

FMX is boring, except when Tom Pagès is riding.

The fact is that even though those 3 double backflip combos from Sherwood were insane, it's boring. We haven't seen that before but i didn't get anything of it, the variation was weak(it's insane that i say that about double backflip combos). The things Colton Moore and Pagès does is the new age competition FMX that can survive but not the classical FMX that we've seen since 04-05. The best moto comp in this years X Games was the quarter pipe.

Red Bull X-Fighters is still interesting because they actually have very cool and different courses around the world + the best riders.

I always prefered the acrobatic stuff guys did without flips, KoD Tsunami's, Cliffhangers etc but do it so clean and crisp with amazing extension almost like its ballet.

Nowadays it's just double flips with untidy combos. Don't get me wrong the double flip is insane but as a spectator I prefer the non-flip stuff. Just so satisfying to watch.

But yeah Nitro Circus? Holy fuck balls

I agree with Gandorlf.

It might sound insane but i would rather watch a tsunami flip from Sherwood(that guy is capable of insane extension) than the second or third double backflip combo.

Nitro Circus is pretty decent because it more like an actual entertainment show in my opinion. I also like that they seem to take safety pretty seriously so everything doesn't feel as up tight. And by uptight I mean that in X Games if you have a get off straight to dirt good chance you will be seriously seriously fucked up. For some reason that isn't enjoyable for me to watch and anticipate. Nitro Circus has a great atmosphere, they land on rubber mats with inflatable airbags etc. I think this helps the riders have a more enjoyable experience which in turns translates to a better experience for the viewers. Sure, everyone likes to see a gnarly get off. But I don't think anyone wants to see someone die or get paralyzed over this shit. Not the riders and certainly not the fans.

It's the same with any sport where you compete individually and are given a score by judges. Gymnastics, ice skating, FMX, etc. all reach their limits. Thing is, the previous two are only shown every four years, so they maintain their wow factor. People on this forum see FMX fairly often, so it's not amazing to us. Sports where you directly compete against your opposition are much more exciting and the wow factor isn't what they depend on for ratings.

Way back when, when is was 17-18 (so 02-03 timeline) I used to do freestyle demos for Monster Jam (I believe that's what they called it back then). My intentions were to get my feet wet first with doing demos then try to compete but due to being young, extremely dumb, bad decisions, bad attitude and very little support, besides my brother, I ended up getting out of it. I don't really keep up with fmx anymore as I feel after the foam pit became a training staple the sport kind of lost it's luster. Not taking away from the current riders because they are doing some insane, high risk stuff, but you know they practiced it into a foam pit for several months beforehand and have it pretty dialed come showtime. I do think I remember reading somewhere that Adam Jones was one of the only guys that learned the majority of his backflip tricks straight to dirt which is insane. Carey Hart doing the first ever backflip, for the first time, over dirt at The Gravity Games is probably the most intense thing the sport has ever seen as well as TP's double backflip. I mean you could feel the tension and anxiety in the arena through your TV screen.

My very small, semi-professional stint was fun while it lasted, but I wasn't a mature enough 17 year old kid to be able to make any wise decisions with what I had going on at the time. I was able to give the sport 2 new tricks "The Rigormortis" which was a dead body to sterilizer and "The Highlighter" which was named after the fallen rider Adam Pierce and is a vertical dead body and the trick made it into the MX vs. ATV video games and Adam Jones is still doing the Highlighter today in his runs which is super cool.

Here's a pic of me doing the Highlighter at the first demo I did back in 02 I believe and a double grab on a 300lb Cannondale haha. Some of the funnest and darkest times of my life.

Hey, that's a great story of yours, never knew about the origin of the trick! I'm currently working on the first substantial book about FMX and would love to connect with you. I'm sure you have some great experiences and insights. Please let me know how I can contact or find you on the socials if you're interested!

Cheers
Jordi
